My own looking has had many teachers. One of them is Keith Johnson, who discovered these mysterious icons scattered on the pavement of a New Haven parking lot. Out of them he formed this photographic constellation, multi-paneled, like a comic strip of perception. Whether it comes in the form of a waterfall’s vapor or the heaped stones of a prison graveyard, Johnson has this gift of assembling the happenstance of the world, its everyday codes and cyphers, into messages we can now overhear.
