Shaw’s Robbery Foiled

The note said there was a bomb, and the clerk ran to Sgt. Douglas Harkins.
That’s how a robbery at Shaw’s was averted on Monday, according to police.
Here’s what happened, according to police spokesman Officer Joe Avery:
At 10:30 a.m., a 48-year-old man walked into Shaw’s supermarket on Whalley Avenue. He approached the courtesy desk and passed a note to the clerk, claiming that he had a bomb. He told the clerk that he also had a gun, and demanded money.
The clerk fled and notified Sgt. Harkins, who was working an extra-duty shift in the store. The suspect ran east on Elm Street and was later arrested at Edgewood and Dwight.
In other police news, according to Avery:
The U.S. Marshall Service’s fugitive task force spotted a 43-year-old wanted man at 201 Kimberly Ave at 10 a.m. on Monday. The man tried to flee out a window and became belligerent when officers caught up to him. Cops tased him twice, then handcuffed him.
Officers stopped four juveniles on Hobart Street near Whalley Avenue at 12:53 p.m. on Monday. One had a BB gun and was arrested.
A woman was robbed at 6:30 p.m. on Olive Street. She said she was approached from behind by a woman who grabbed her pocketbook. The purse fell to the ground in a struggle and most of the contents spilled out. The suspect fled with a small change purse containing about $2.
A 15-year-old was robbed of his bike and cell phone just before 8 p.m. at 1362 State St. He told police he was followed from Ferry and Lombard Street by three teenage boys. One of them had a black semi-automatic gun, which he threatened the victim with and then took his $400 bike and T-Mobile phone.
Officers responding on Tuesday to a 1 a.m. alarm at the Troup Middle School on Edgewood Avenue found a 31-year-old man inside. He was arrested.
Officer T. McNeil arrested a 17-year-old after a reported robbery at 3:30 a.m. at Lamberton Street and Howard Avenue. The victim said that a man put a hard object to the back of his head and took his wallet, including $484 cash.
