Wreaths On Parade

On Saturday before the Columbus Day Parade, Theresa Argento led a promenade from St. Michael’s Church in Wooster Square to lay floral wreaths at the base of the Columbus Statue. The 86-year old community leader practically invented the new tradition herself.
New Haven’s Columbus Day Parade saw participation dropping so low after 9/11 that in 2002 it was canceled.
Enter Argento, as a longtime organizer of the parade’s events, with two great ideas: Rotate the parade among the five towns of Greater New Haven to involve more people. That idea, now in its second rotation among the four “Havens” and Hamden, brought the parade to East Haven on Sunday.
The second great idea — the wreath ceremony — always takes place in historical heart of Italian-American Connecticut, Wooster Square.
The pre-9/11 parades used to feature one wreath usually laid by an official, such as U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro (pictured) at the base of the statue. Argento decided to expand that and thereby create more involvement.
Over the years the wreaths have grown from a handful to 37 this year, most representing Italian-American civic organizations and clubs. Board of Aldermen and politicians also contribute their votive flowers.
Before being deposited at the navigator’s feet, they were blessed in church by Father Ralph Colicchio (pictured with DeLauro). It’s important to Argento for the wreaths to begin at St. Michael’s.
“Columbus was a missionary,” she said. Although that evangelizing role is much maligned these days in the spirit of political correctness, said several speakers, it should be revisited more objectively and as a point of pride for Italian Americans, they said.
In what she termed “spiritual” take on the ceremony, DeLauro recalled the 15 people, mostly Italian women, but including three African-Americans, who died in the Franklin Street garment factory fire in 1957. After reading aloud their names, she concluded: “My mom and I will lay our wreath in honor of those women.”

Rosa delauro said columbus was a missionary.Wrong
Columbus was a murder and terrorist. He did the first 9/11 on the people of the land. Where are the wreaths for the people of the land who he murder.

DeLauro didn't call him a missionary. Theresa Argento did. Rosa DeLauro didn't even lay her wreath in honor of Columbus, she did it in honor of the factory workers killed in the neighborhood in a fire in 1957.

The celebration of Columbus Day during Italian Heritage month (October) continues to be a grand celebration except for those who like to rewrite history to their liking. Like all of us Columbus was not a perfect human being but his accomplishments opened the world of 1492 to a new era. He was indeed "a missionary" and brought Christianity from the shores of Spain to the new world. In fact, the founders of our country, not perfect human beings, came here because of their faith. To me, a non-Italian-American, it appears that the criticism of Columbus, by some people - not all, in many ways is a slap at Italian-Americans.

Yup. Like all of us, an imperfect human being. "I certify to you that, with the help of God, we shall powerfully enter into your country and shall make war against you in all ways and manners that we can, and shall subject you to the yoke and obedience of the Church and of Their Highnesses. We shall take you and your wives and your children, and shall make slaves of them, and as such shall sell and dispose of then as Their Highnesses may command. And we shall take your goods, and shall do you all the mischief and damage that we can, as to vassals who do not obey and refuse to receive their lord and resist and contradict him." -Christopher Columbus

Some real history-- the "founders" of our country came here out of sheer greed. There was some religious motivation on the part of some, but greed was the fuel. Do NOT point to the "Pilgrims" either. Jamestown had been settled 13 years and already had a representative gov't before the Pilgrims set sail. Those on the Mayflower were Johnny-come-lately's. And Jamestown existed for no other reason than to find the same kind of gold the Spanish found in South America. When they realized there was no gold they turned to tobacco where gold is still being made. And even the Pilgrims were not totally greed-free. And, btw, religious freedom was not something they were interested in unless you were one of them. Anyone else got hanged. And New Haven was intended to be what New York is now-- the Dutch contolled New York (Amsterdam) them. Davenport and Eaton were just too hurried to get the money rolling to be bothered to sound the harbor, which would shortly be proven too shallow for a commercial empire.

Threefifths,
If it wasn't for Columbus, you'd probably be living today in a third world country somewhere without running water or electricity under the rule of a militant warlord.
Aren't you glad to be in America where you can say anything you want on a computer?
