This Time, Craigslist Helped The Cops

A recurring nemesis — the online sex ad — has also proved one of the police’s best tools in cracking down on prostitutes.
So revealed Branford police after they closed down an alleged prostitution ring this week. Police said the alleged operation, at Marlow’s Health Studio, operated out of a second-story set of stores at a Branford strip mall.
Based on tips from citizens and a bold advertisement last month on an adult services page of the New Haven area’s “adult services” section of Craigslist, Branford police conducted a major investigation into Marlow’s. Fourteen police officers conducted two simultaneous raids, one in Branford, one in Ansonia, which led to six arrests, including of the alleged co-owner and the manager of the place.
Marlow’s operated in full view at a local mall off Exit 55 of I-95, the police charge. Police closed down the place, which they describe as a full-scale prostitution ring. Lt. Geoffrey Morgan said police carried out the Marlow’s sign that hung in the window, the massage tables and most importantly the client lists and other business records Wednesday night. It is now closed.
Over the last 30 years the place had been known as Marlow’s. Police said it is unclear when it actually became a house of prostitution operating openly above a nail and hair place and steps away from a dog grooming business and a Chinese restaurant. It has been known to be a massage studio and a health club. Police believe ownership changed hands some months ago. The co-owner, Jazmin Benavides, 34, and Howard Johnson, 48, who ran the desk, both of Ansonia, were charged with promoting and permitting prostitution.
Police Chief John DeCarlo reiterated in an interview that prostitution is not a victimless crime, that it has long been linked to illegal drug trafficking and related criminal activity. He also said Branford should not be a destination place for prostitution, which it had become in certain circles via the internet and Craigslist.
“We have looked at Marlow’s before. It has been on my radar,” he said. Recently the Craigslist ad and tips from local citizens gave us a new incentive. Detective Lt. William Carroll put it at the top of his list. “We made it a priority,” he said in an interview.
Law enforcement in general has complained that Craiglist has abetted prostituion. State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal has led a national effort to crack down on Craiglist escort ads. At the same, the site is proving a double-edge sword: This is the second time Craigslist has helped Branford cops track down alleged prostitution and make arrests.
The Craigslist’s advertisement for Marlow’s was long and detailed and ran next to a sex ad for a woman who described herself as a “Golden Ebony Goddess.” The Goddess ad on Craigslist led to a Branford police undercover prostitution sting at a local motel. A 25-year-old Bridgeport woman was arrested Nov 12.
Craigslist has since removed the ad; the Eagle obtained it last month about the time when police ramped up their inquiry into Marlow’s. It gave its hours: Monday through Friday from 11 to 9:30 p.m.and Saturday from 11 to 6:30 p.m. It set the scene — a “cozy location” — and told customers to reply to a Yahoo e-mail address. It gave its phone number. It also ran two rave reviews from satisfied customers.
“Come meet Angel on Wednesday and Courtney on Thursday. Don’t Miss this,” the ad read. “Don’t miss our sensational Saturday featuring a blond bombshell.
“Come see all of our beautiful hostesses! Many to choose from. “
The kicker, and the draw, police said, was that Marlow’s offered, as the ad went on to say, “at least one new hostess every other day, three at all times. You choose.” The new woman hostess every other day was the draw. The women were paid minimal fees, counting on tips mostly. According to another sex site, the customers typically paid a minimum $55 for 30 minutes. Other prices varied.
As for safety, the ad told the johns — two of whom were allegedly at the place when it was raided this week — that Marlow’s was safe:
“We offer a warm, cozy, safe location. Why show up at some hotel with some fake, and take risks?”
To corroborate ongoing illegal sexual activity the police needed an undercover person who would engage in sexual acts and record it. Without a tape, it would be difficult to get search warrants.
Police did not use a police officer, who might be recognized, but a confidential witness who posed as a customer and managed to conceal a recording device. This information led police to secure the arrest warrants that led to the arrests and the confiscation of client lists. Click here to read about a similar undercover operation in New Haven.
According to Lt. Morgan, more arrests are likely. Morgan said an examination of the records seized will provide more detailed information about the history of the operation and the clientele.
Yesterday the only visible reminder of Marlow’s was the lone sign the cops could not pull down, the huge one that lists all the mall’s businesses.

How ridiculous. Obviously in Germany they know how to be a progressive police force.

Howard Johnson...what a shame to see him swing so low. I used to love his clam strips and butter brickle ice cream.

At least the cops will know where to find him next time. Just look for the orange roof.

Wow, I'm shocked but not! I've eaten at Gourmet Wok, and never realized what I was near. Now how about they close up the Accu-place across from All Pets Club? And Zodiac, next to Bocca in East Haven? We all know these places are suspicious, and near good, clean, legit businesses. We need to fight them as a community.

I completely agree Morris Cove Mom. Lets start investigating all the suspicious businesses that we maybe don't particularly like or patronize and try to shut them down with our suspicions. I, too, find it disgusting and revolting to think good, innocent Americans might have been eating food in the same 100 ft radius as consenting adults having intercourse. How filthy! I certainly pray that you never got any seminal fluids in your chinese due to proximity, you know those types of sinners have the HIV, gods trying to thin their numbers out after all. Thank god there are moms at home like you whose time is freed up to keep your eye on these moral indignations.

Would love to see the client list !!!!!

Paying for an orgasm, that is truly horrible. People should have to get married and exchange major appliances, jewelry and vacation cruises to have their sexual needs met.

Finally...
The police are making life more comfortable for people who don't like other people to pay for sex.

Interesting that all this was going on in the Cheetah Woods section of Branford.

Really? I'm surprised not everyone knew about this. It's been going on for YEARS!!!

"I, too, find it disgusting and revolting to think good, innocent Americans might have been eating food in the same 100 ft radius as consenting adults having intercourse."
haha that sounds like all my apartments in the past 5 years... the best was those spring nights when windows were open and I could actually HEAR the orgasms of the residents above...
Although the comments can sometimes get ridiculous, the premise is not. Arrest those breaking the law and prevent further victimization of the powerless.
Final comment: how do they pick the "witness" for the tape?! They must be lining up!
Posted by: William Kurtz | December 7, 2009 10:55 AM
Arresting the "victimized powerless" seems like an odd way to rescue them from exploitation, but what do I know?

This is too funny! Ned is much funnier!!
It would be interesting to find out who the Johns are. We are in a sad times when people go to such lengths to have their sexual urges met. I suggest marriage counseling (assuming the Johns are married).
Posted by: William Kurtz | December 9, 2009 11:56 AM
That's two people now who have pined wistfully for the list of johns/clients. Why do you care? How does it add to your life to know anything about any other person's sex life whether it's private, commercial or otherwise?
For the record, I don't personally approve of prostitution but to develop my comment above a little bit, it's foolish to 'rescue' people from exploitation by putting them into the criminal justice system. Of the major arguments for outlawing prostitution, the supposed protection of women is the most spurious; criminalizing commercial sex transactions makes the participating women criminals and makes them more, not less, vulnerable to unscrupulous exploitation.
It seems that wanting to see a list of johns is little more than some kind of bizarre and prurient fascination with someone else's life. That's what we have "reality" television for.

Seth, I think if we abolish the antiquated institution of marriage and couples merely dated all their lives and maybe entered into domestic partnerships things like paying for sex wouldn't be so taboo. Its because we're clinging to this passe lie system that we can't come to terms with our sexual needs.

I'd like to know if there are any "family values" politicians, pastors, priests, or police, etc. on the clients list.
Mae West: "Keep a diary and one day it will keep you."
By governing sexual relations between consenting adults, churches and the government expand their power immensely.
Curiously, at one time, prostitutes were seen as upholding the existing social order, by serving the sexual needs of unmarried men, thereby allowing "good women" to remain virgins until marriage... As usual, the U.S. is weighted down by the Puritan "moral" millstone around its neck...

addressing my earlier comment: "Although the comments can sometimes get ridiculous, the premise is not. Arrest those breaking the law and prevent further victimization of the powerless."
what I meant is what I stated: arrest those breaking the law. [doing so would] prevent further victimization of the powerless [women who are forced into prostitution and kept there through threats, poverty (not being paid), and other abuse.
Ray, no one is forcing you to marry. It is legal in Connecticut to marry whomever you wish, as long as it's between two people. Civil unions are another form of legal union, but I believe your argument is that there are legal and tax benefits bestowed upon married persons that favor relationships of that type.
I co-own a house with my girlfriend, but we're not married. It's possible to keep the law out of your life as long as you do not mistreat others or pay for sexual companionship.
The prostitutes in these operations aren't the same that work at the Bunny Ranch. They're forced into it. Those who are responsible should be prosecuted. The "informants" should find other ways to "gather evidence." It is disgusting that they perpetuate the violence by participating in the name of "justice."
"Public shame" lists may or may not work, but together with "sex offender registries," they are a cruel and unusual punishment and should be outlawed. If a person is deemed to be a danger to society, they should not be released. Registration on a public "list" for life should not be part of the punishment.
Posted by: William Kurtz | December 9, 2009 5:28 PM
Okay, Ned; I hadn't thought of it that way. Exposing hypocrisy would be one good reason to release the list, but I still think it would be unnecessarily destructive to people's lives and unwarranted.
Posted by: Ned | December 9, 2009 9:04 PM
Sex work is not the only industry in which people are exploited and not all sex workers are exploited or victims. Not all sex workers are women. The currently illegal status of prostitution does nothing to improve any abusive, coercive, or exploitive practices within the industry.
People have the right to negotiate how and with whom they can establish their relationships:
"..many aguna cases arise as a result of a husband withholding a get in order to extort money or extract a more favorable divorce settlement or to get even with his wife."
Denying people a sexual life is cruel. "George Taleporos, a researcher into sexuality and disability, said many disabled people used prostitutes and brothels because it is difficult to date in the usual way."

You want to see a client list? What, you think men visiting this place showed ID? Did they collect frequent flyer miles? Hell, maybe the were forced to give references. The client list will contain the likes of one Bugs Bunny, possibly Yosemite Sam, and absolutely an Elmer Fudd.
There is no client list.
Posted by: RAY WILLIS | December 10, 2009 5:06 AM
Ozone Road, my point was more along the lines of if there was no marriage then the solution to the prostitution issue wouldn't be marriage counseling as Seth suggested. Also, married men shouldn't be married and visiting prostitutes, its disingenuous. I guess I'm advocating honesty, and honestly these women are not sex slaves forced into sex work, at least not in Branford. Or maybe neither you or I honestly know for sure. But if prostitution was legally regulated everyone would honestly benefit. The sex worker would be protected by OSHA, the customer would feel safer having services rendered, the community could have more of a say of where such establishments openly operated, and the state could tax the heck out of the industry and build schools and hospitals. But that's just my two cents.

Maybe the posting of the client list would solve the mystery as to why this place was active for so long !!!
