DeLauro: Stupak Won’t Make It

A last-minute amendment to prevent abortion funding found its way into the House version of the health care reform bill under consideration in Washington. Rosa DeLauro plans to make sure it’s not there when the bill becomes law.

The amendment is known as the Stupak amendment. Democratic U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak of Michigan proposed it just before the Nov. 7 U.S. House of Representatives vote to approve its version of the health care reform bill.

DeLauro, New Haven’s U.S. representative and longstanding pro-choice proponent, took a minute to speak about it after a ribbon-cutting ceremony in New Haven. Click on the play arrow above to watch some of her comments.

The amendment prohibits the use of any money covered under the pending health reform bill for abortions or any costs associated with a health plan that covers abortions, except in cases of rape, incest, or life-threatening danger to the mother. The Stupak amendment passed 240 to 194. The abortion question is considered one of two major obstacles to assembling a majority to pass a health reform bill into law in coming weeks.

Despite her opposition to the amendment, DeLauro nonetheless voted for the amended overall bill, keeping it alive. She said that she plans to work to keep the amendment out of the Senate version of the bill.

The amendment is so far not included in the Senate version. DeLauro said on Monday that she hopes that it will also not make it into the final version of the bill.

“I’m optimistic that it will not be there and I’m going to work hard to make sure that it isn’t,” DeLauro said.

In a recent New York Times opinion piece, U.S. Rep. Stupak expressed hope that the “spirit of our legislation will make it into the final bill.” He wrote that his amendment was intended to simply maintain current law on federal financing of abortion.

On Monday, DeLauro took issue with the op-ed, saying that it was “filled with inaccuracies.”

“We’ve got to pass health care and we have to maintain current law. Stupak is not current law,” she said. “Stupak goes beyond current law.”

I absolutely support any restriction of abortion, and applaud those in the House that are fighting for the rights of the most defenseless among us. Why there is such animosity when it comes to the right to life, and the protection of that life as a society, I will never understand.

I hope that DeLauro can think outside of herself for this one and end her fight. It is truly a stain on our society. She certainly does not represent me in this issue, and labeling it as a last-minute amendment is just simply disingenuous. This amendment has been going back and forth for quite a while, with supporters on both sides of the isle.

Neither side has it right either.

The Right is against abortion but for the death penalty and seemingly endless war.

The Left is all for the holocaust that is abortion, but stands up for the rights of convicts on death row. At least they don't like war.

Since Roe v. Wade, we have performed almost 50 million abortions in this country. The entire population of the United States is only 300 millioin. That number constitutes 1 in every 6 people in our country.

Why can't their be a third party with a simple and clear position on protecting all life, from beginning to end, without shame or hesitation. That would be truly courageous.

Atwater St.

As an old Fair-Havenite , happy that there are folks still there who recognize that the pro-death - for- babies people like DeLauro share in the blood of millions of babies killed because of their efforts.

Yet she keeps being elected.

Too bad.

This legislation is about providing quality, affordable health care for families, businesses, and the government. Solving that problem - which is long overdue for our leaders - is hard enough given all the entrenched interests. To use it to change federal policy regarding abortion / reproductive rights is shameful. Yank it from the health care bill. Agree, if people want, to have that fight on its own terms, in its own time. Rosa's doing the right thing, and I believe the polls suggest the overwhelming majority of the people who vote for her agree.

Scrap the scam! No amendment can transform a Marxist scam like Obamacare into an honest bill. Any "amendments" will be just tricks, like the Stupak amendment, to force us to swallow the scam.

As you may have heard, Robert Creamer, a CONVICTED FELON and Obama’s ACORN associate, outlined the guidelines for the Obamacare SCAM in his 2007 book, “Stand Up Straight: How Progressives Can Win.”

Creamer wrote in his 2007 book:

* “We must create a national consensus that health care is a right, not a commodity; and that government must guarantee that right.”
* “We must create a national consensus that the health care system is in crisis.”
* “Our messaging program over the next two years should focus heavily on reducing the credibility of the health insurance industry and focusing on the failure of private health insurance.”
* “We need not agree in advance on the components of a plan, but we must foster a process that can ultimately yield consensus.”

As per Creamer’s book, their main objective is NOT improving health care. It’s to advance their power through the “democratization of wealth” (socialism/Marxim) as per the teachings of Saul Alinsky.
