What The Doctors Didn't Tell Him

by Staff | February 25, 2008 10:20 AM |

rp_spat_photo2.jpgWhen city native Raman Prasad landed in the hospital as a teen, it looked as though he'd live the rest of his life as a hostage to an incurable bowel disease. The medical establishment didn't tell him about a diet that could -- and would -- free him. The Internet did; now Prasad is using the Web to feed the hopes of others. Full story here.

Chris%20and%20Mattie.jpgThese two people coordinate a community garden in the Hill. And rather than trying to keep people out, they want neighbors to come in and take the produce. That’s the spirit that pervaded the New Haven Land Trust’s 25th anniversary celebration at Hopkins School.

Vegans Vie for the Gold

by Allan Appel | March 26, 2007 9:00 AM |

IMG_1151.JPGA hundred raging, committed, or still chicken-eating yet aspiring vegans like Matthew Feiner (pictured) converged on the Fuel Coffee Shop on Chapel Street in Wooster Square for the world's putatively first-ever vegan cupcake-eating contest. peter.JPGA love affair is blooming in Wooster Square, even amid the snow and frozen slush deposited by the season's biggest winter storm. It's a love affair between local producers of organic or otherwise healthy food, and city people who are willing to navigate unplowed streets to buy the yummy stuff.

Indian Vegan Cafe Readies Uptown Move

by Paul Bass | November 20, 2006 9:14 AM |

The most improbable of vegan restaurants -- Imagin Cafe, tucked inside a photo store at 930 Chapel St., serving scrumptiously prepared and spiced nondairy vegetarian Indian wraps and soups, smoothies and ice cream -- should have a home of its own by the end of next week. The cafe part (not the photo processing) moves to the corner of Chapel and Howe. It will expand to night hours, add a section with table service, and expand its menu to full-dinner options, according to Sudhir Shah, whose son owns the operation. The new restaurant's name will be Ahimsa. That translates to compassion -- and a happy belly.

by Melinda Tuhus | November 14, 2006 8:37 AM |

This box of gorgeous fresh produce from the Wooster Square farmers' market "" including pears, apples, and squash "" could have been made into pies or sold at another market the next day, but Elpidio Trejo (at left in photo) of Rose's Berry Farm in Glastonbury said he'd rather give it to the Gleanings project to feed New Haven's hungry. Max Wrubel, a volunteer with Food Not Bombs, was more than happy to accept it.

Catholic Workers Confront More Hunger, Appeal For Help

by Melinda Tuhus | October 31, 2006 8:19 AM |

"It's a beautiful thing," Paul Nuñez said as he ate some great pancakes at the Amistad Catholic Worker House in the Hill. Nunez was talking about the unusual way the family-run home feeds and opens its doors to the needy. (Click here to listen.) An uptick in demand for food there lately may portend a rise in hunger around town.
