News of a harrowing morning crash buzzed through East Rock Friday, as victims of incidents in two neighborhoods -- a pedestrian hit by a car and a storeowner shot in a robbery -- lay in serious condition in the hospital.

Alleged Burglar Caught

Police spokesman Joe Avery reports:
"The New Haven Police Burglary Robbery Unit arrested Michael Murphy 27 years old of 52 Henry St, on burglary charges today for three burglaries, two that occurred on Orchard Place in April 2008 and another on Tilton Street that occurred in November of 2007. According to Sgt Pasquale Marino who supervises the Unit, Detective Christopher Perrone worked the case and followed several leads that led to the signing of three warrants at the court bearing $150,000 dollar bond.
"Yale Police also had a warrant for Murphy for burglary."

Door-Kickers Flee

A woman told police she was home at 4:01 a.m. Tuesday when she heard someone kicking the door of her Winthrop Avenue home. She yelled at them. They ran away without gaining entry. Cops showed up and found that the door hinges "appeared to be bent out of shape."

Residents Displaced

Families on two floors of a Fair Haven house were forced out of their homes by a fire early Friday, according to police.
Firefighters responded to a report of a residential fire at 174 Fillmore St. at 1:09 a.m. When they got there, the third floor was on fire. The second and third-floor residents were unable to return to their apartments. No injuries were reported, but a third-floor resident was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital to get checked out.
"The New Haven Fire Arson Unit responded and determined that the fire was not suspicious," read a police report. "The families that were displaced will be seeking shelter with family members."
And cops made a drug bust at 420 Huntington Street, 2nd Floor, on Thursday. They made one arrest for possession of marijuana.

Heist Attempted

A man burst into a check-cashing store at 426 Whalley Ave. (Whalley and Ellsworth) at 10 a.m. Wednesday, according to police. The robber showed a gun and demanded cash. The suspect, described as a six-foot tall man in a black hooded sweatshirt, fled empty-handed.

Shooting Probed

Police are still investigating a shooting Monday afternoon on County Street.
The victim was found at 4:20 p.m. Monday in the driveway of 167 County St. with "two or three" gunshot wounds, according to police spokesman Officer Joe Avery. Witnesses told police the shooter ran inside 140 Henry St. Police found a handgun in the rear yard. No arrests had been made as of Tuesday afternoon. The victim, who police now say is an 18-year-old from Townsend Street, was treated for "serious" injuries at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Teen Shot Near County Street

A 17-year-old took a bullet to the back in the second shooting in under three weeks near the Goffe Street Park.
The juvenile was shot three times, in the back and leg, around 4 p.m. Monday in the area of the park, according to Chief Administrative Officer Rob Smuts. The victim contacted someone on nearby County Street who called police.

Student Ejected

Police report a hairy crash at Goffe and Sherman Avenues at 1 a.m. Friday.
Five Southern Connecticut State University students were driving on Goffe Street when a car ran a red light on Sherman Avenue and crashed into their car, police said. The rear door of the student's car flew upon upon impact.
At least one of the rear passengers was thrown from the car. All students were taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
The driver who allegedly ran the light was charged with failure to obey a traffic signal and failure to grant the right of way. The driver was also treated at the hospital.

A man walked into the Rite Aid pharmacy at 60 Whalley Ave. at 8:43 p.m. Monday, according to police. He tried to buy a box of Mike & Ike's fruity candy with some pennies. The clerk told him she couldn't take pennies. The crestfallen candy-seeker stepped aside. As the next customer paid, the man reached into the cash register and began taking cash.
