Spigot and Spirit at Chatham Square
by Allan Appel | September 11, 2009 10:35 AM | Permalink
It used to be that David Zakur and his fellow greenspace gardeners shlepped five-gallon paint cans heavy with H2O from a neighboring house to water the trees and plantings at the revived Chatham Square Park. No longer. The ceremonial spigot was turned on Friday morning.

Chatham Square Festival Delivers
by Melinda Tuhus | September 22, 2008 9:41 AM | Permalink
Horse-drawn wagon rides, gunny sack races and a boys-against-girls tug of war made the Chatham Square festival seem like a throwback to the "good old days." Information about home foreclosures and the survey about neighborhood problems like drugs and prostitution brought it right up to the present.

Road Witched, Traffic Calmed, Cop Cookied
by Allan Appel | August 10, 2008 12:02 PM | Permalink
"Road witching" came to New Haven for the first time as traffic-calming champion Erin Sturgis-Pascale led a dozen of her fellow Fair Haveners in "chalking in" medians and curb bump-outs -- which, if actually built, would slow traffic and help reclaim the streets for non-vehicular uses.

Kids Sighted. . . Walking!
by Allan Appel | October 3, 2007 2:56 PM | Permalink
Proving that modern kids still know how to put one foot in front of the other, 556 Clinton Avenue School Cougars proudly hoofed it from Chatham Square Park to their school Wednesday in celebration of International Walk to School Day. A parade of notables walked alongside them -- and discussed how to make every day Walk to School Day.

Chatham Square Fest Goes Off -- With a Hitch
by Linda Cuckovich | September 17, 2007 7:47 AM | Permalink
Chatham Square residents and friends came together to hear music, play games, and promote community -- or maybe it was just to ride through the streets of Fair Haven in a horse-drawn carriage.

Crash Pins Girl Under Car
by Allan Appel | July 13, 2007 12:26 AM | Permalink
Fair Haveners are, unfortunately, accustomed to garden variety vehicular speeding along some of its wide streets. However, when the driver of a Honda raced through a stop sign Thursday afternoon at the intersection of Maltby and Chatham, just at the corner of pretty Chatham Square Park, the consequences were not only horrific, but criminal: A side-impact collision that ejected an 11-year old back-seat passenger from the struck car and pinned her under another vehicle. She's now fighting for her life.

The "Intensity of Neighborhood" Goes On Display
by Allan Appel | May 3, 2007 1:23 PM | Permalink
When Erna Caron told Ying-Ying Ma about living in Chatham Square, a lasting story was born -- about a meat freezer, about a family named Finnegan, about a river and oysters, about a multiracial urban "village," about community most of all.

In Chatham Square, Community-Building In Action
by Allan Appel | April 19, 2007 12:54 PM | Permalink
The meeting was officially over. Paula Walker, Miguel Cartagena, and Lee Cruz were still hanging around. They discussed who would take care of lights, who would bring in portable toilets, and who would lead a spruce up of Chatham Square Park for the area's first concert in years, which is now in the planning.

Shhh...Chatham Square Throws A Traffic Calming Party
by Allan Appel | February 26, 2007 9:05 AM | Permalink
These boys alone will not likely calm the traffic in Fair Haven merely by shush-shushing. That is one reason the Chatham Square Neighborhood Association had no problem throwing a noisy second annual winter family festival and promoting its traffic calming campaign at the same enjoyable time.
