Bloomberg-Rangel in '08?

by Steve Kalb | May 4, 2008 8:03 PM |

stevekalbZ.JPGI don't know about you but I happen to think it is time for Americans to call for a "mulligan," a "do-over." I think that Obama, Clinton and McCain are flawed, uninspiring candidates and there just has to be somebody better.

Budget Shenanigans

by Steve Kalb | April 21, 2008 3:07 PM |

stevekalbZ.JPGGrowing up we were taught the so-called "new math." It was pretty much like the "old math" with the notable exception that learning how to do it was sometimes more important than getting the right answer. It didn't make any sense then either.

How Long Is "Eventually"?

by Melinda Tuhus | April 21, 2008 9:58 AM |

arnold%20signing.jpgGov. Arnold Schwarzenegger told a giddy crowd of Yale students and others on Friday afternoon that, as environmentalists move beyond guilt as a motivating force, their movement can become "hip, cutting edge, even sexy."

Of Fakes and Smokes

by Steve Kalb | April 8, 2008 8:31 AM |

stevekalbZ.JPGAbout the time I turned 50 some marketer someplace got wind of the clock change and I became the target of every "stay healthy... live longer" mailer ever produced. Most never say anything about living better, just about living longer. With the exception of Dennis Hopper reminding me that 60 really is the "new 50," none say anything about actually enjoying yourself. It is all about living longer and making more money for retirement.

Of The News and Campaigns

by Steve Kalb | March 24, 2008 8:21 AM |

stevekalbZ.JPGThe word fellas, just in case you missed it is: "content." I buy newspapers because of "content." Not because I can ultimately use them to line the kitty box. I buy them for "content." And if you fail to provide "content" I'll go somewhere else.

Shop 'Til I Drop

by Steve Kalb | March 10, 2008 4:50 PM |

stevekalbZ.JPGEvery time I think about the three candidates running for president and their solutions to our economic problems, I am reminded about what the president told us to do: Go shopping.

Huh?

Government Gone to The Dogs

by Steve Kalb | February 25, 2008 9:10 AM |

stevekalbZ.JPG In 35 years as a reporter a I thought I had pretty much heard and seen it all. So it was with a fair amount of astonishment and disbelief when I read the story in the Hamden Daily News last week about how Hamden gets rid of dead, homeless dogs. It throws them in the garbage....okay...the landfill....right next to the banana peels and orange rinds.

Make My Day

by Steve Kalb | February 11, 2008 8:13 AM |

stevekalbZ.JPGIf John McCain thought it was tough in a North Vietnamese prison camp for five years he is in for a real surprise. He'll see that as a "walk in the park" after he deals with the right hand side of the Republican party in the coming months. But McCain is in the driver's seat, which drives the right-wing fanatic talk show hosts and "think tanks" nuts.

Birds of a Feather

by Steve Kalb | January 28, 2008 10:12 AM |

stevekalbZ.JPGI'm probably the only one in Connecticut who was not surprised when disgraced former Gov. John Rowland was hand-picked by the mayor of Waterbury for a $95,000 quasi-government job in Waterbury. Rowland had backed Mike Jarjura in his bid for mayor in 2001, so it was "payback" time.

2007 Voting Guide...Well sort of

by Steve Kalb | October 29, 2007 7:55 AM |

stevekalbZ.JPGIn a little more than a week voters across the state will be going to the polls to vote for local mayors, town clerks, first selectmen and a host of other not-too-terribly-glamorous jobs. While the national pundits' pastime has become handicapping the presidential election, to many there are more pressing concerns: local schools, local taxes and are they really going to put another strip shopping center in this town? By all accounts voting is one of only a few requirement this democratic society makes of you; since whom you vote for could determine your taxes I am always amazed by the number of people who don't vote.

Merry ... Xmas?

by Steve Kalb | October 14, 2007 9:03 PM |

stevekalbZ.JPGWalking into a department store last week, I had to stop and check my watch (which thankfully has the day, date and month on it) to make sure I had not slept through Halloween and Thanksgiving. Is it Christmas already? There I was staring at Santa Claus, (okay not the real one... he's still up in the North Pole making that list) and when I got home there was a Christmas sale on one of the TV shopping networks.
