"Sweethearts" Were The Muse
by Allan Appel | December 20, 2009 1:28 PM | Permalink
The International Sweethearts of Rhythm were the country's first all-girl integrated swing band. In the 1940s they toured America, including the South, breaking musical and race relations grounds wherever they went.
Last week they arrived in New Haven through the poetry of Marilyn Nelson. The state's former poet laureate read from her new book of that title to two dozen poetry lovers at the Institute Library.

Have You Seen Us?
At Long Wharf Theatre
November 24-December 20
Have You Seen Us? is what one may call an "incident play," a story driven by a singular event. As its protagonist Henry Parsons (Sam Waterston) frames it in his prologue to this one hour-and-twenty minute meditation on racism, displacement, and addiction, sometimes it takes the nudging of one domino in the supposedly well-designed life to bring the rest falling down.

Altman On "The Actor's Life"
by Staff | December 15, 2009 12:44 PM | Permalink

It's not every day you run into people on the streets of New Haven that can say they have just finished filming a movie with Meryl Streep, or George Clooney - but Bruce Altman can.

What Goes La Ronde
by Allan Appel | December 15, 2009 9:27 AM | Permalink
When the actress takes off her corset and invites the poet to kneel down beside her to pray, he expresses his devotion by grabbing her in his arms. It turns out all right. She wasn't praying to God anyway, but for the poet to seduce her, which he promptly does.

Out of House and Home
by Allan Appel | December 14, 2009 10:55 AM | Permalink
Before images of Baby Jesus and family in their rustic shelter begin to overwhelm with sweetness and light, an exhibition in town seeks to remind us that the holy family would also have qualified under the current and far less joyful federal homelessness guidelines.

Pixels May Help Rescue A Synagogue
by Allan Appel | December 7, 2009 7:56 AM | Permalink
Herb Croog actually remembers playing among the stone and brick as the foundations of the Orchard Street Shul were laid in 1924. The 95-year old says that this last survivor of more than a dozen Jewish houses of worship lost to urban renewal may yet come back again.
If so, artists using the newest media may just may be leading the way.
