Quarry Park Cleared Of Junk
by Staff | June 14, 2009 2:16 PM | Permalink
Lisa Kereszi took part in Saturday's clean-up in Quarry Park organized by Fair Haven Heights Alderman Alex Rhodeen. She reports: "It was a success: 20 people showed up, and we hauled out a whole bunch of large items that were illegally dumped there; some things had been there for decades. Several mattresses, a heavy car axle, a Lexus steering column, a kid's pool and pump, a whole swingset with slide, plastic chairs, 2 propane tanks, old kiddie pedal car, old tricycles, a sled.... LCI pitched in, and the parks department will pick up everything from Russell Street."

Love Walks The Track

Ivette Altieri sent in the following photos and write-up:
Each year, on hundreds of campuses across the country and in thousands of communities around the world, one event unites millions of total strangers in the global fight against cancer. That event is the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life and it returned to Yale University once again this year. American Cancer Relay for Life took place at the Payne Whitney Gymnasium on April 18-19th. For the third year, Altieri Family and Friends had the unique opportunity to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and support the American Cancer Society's lifesaving mission by fighting back against a disease that has already taken too much.

Good Day, Sunshine
by Staff | March 23, 2009 11:46 AM | Permalink
A once-in-28-years occurrence is on the horizon, and 100 people filled a room at the Study at Yale Sunday night to hear all about. Rabbi Chaim Shmuel Friedman brought an animated presentation to town explaining "Birca Hachama" -- the one day every 28 years that Jews offer a special blessing to the sun because of an alignment of the sun, moon, and other heavenly bodies. (Click here for another video explanation.) The event was organized by the Yeshiva of New Haven; Avi Hack sent in the following photos and captions from the evening, which drew people from a cross-section of area Jewish institutions. The Yeshiva is organizing a sunrise prayer expedition to the top of East Rock on the actual date, April 8. (Call 606-4286 for details.)
