2nd Pedestrian Struck By Bus

by Melissa Bailey | May 4, 2009 4:26 PM |

A pedestrian was critically injured Monday morning when he was hit by a CT Transit bus.

The collision happened at 8:45 a.m. at College Street and South Frontage Road, according to Philip Fry, a spokesman for CT Transit. The intersection, near the Yale medical campus, is known for heavy traffic, both of vehicles and pedestrians. Fry said the bus was making a left-hand turn when it struck the man. The bus was turning left onto South Frontage from College.

The victim, a 56-year-old man from Pennsylvania, was treated at Yale-New Haven Hospital for head trauma, police said. Fry said the company does not know who was at fault; New Haven police are investigating.

Smart Streets Are Here

by Melinda Tuhus | April 14, 2009 1:04 PM |

holly%20pointing.JPGYale University, in collaboration with the City's Department of Transportation, Traffic and Parking, just activated its Smart Streets website. It's interactive -- very interactive. Log on and click on the icon for Pedestrian, Motorist or Cyclist (a "hybrid life form" combining aspects of the first two kinds of road users, according to the irreverent language of the site). Holly Parker (pictured), director of sustainable transportation systems for the university, previewed the site at a meeting on campus on April 2 about complete streets. The site includes quizzes viewers can take to learn about the rules of the road and consequences for flouting them.
