Listen In On The Story Circle
by Tess Wheelwright | Jun 27, 2006 10:56 am
Click here to hear a group of storytellers like these cutting loose over the shocking misadventure of one particularly bold loverboy. They got the tale un-previewed during the “report back” session after an Arts & Ideas “Alternate ROOTS” story circle—and whooped their group pride all the harder.
For more telling, touching, and sometimes saucy audio from the Alternate ROOTS crew’s visit to New Haven, read on and click away.

Hip Hop and Shakespeare Face Off
by | Jun 25, 2006 10:57 pm
A sassy, rhyme-writing teen challenged this frilly-sleeved ghost on the question: What do books by a dead white man have to do with hip hop? William Shakespeare’s ghost got hip and won over a crowd at ECA as part of Arts & Ideas’ Urban Hip Hop Mini Festival.

Balloon-osaurs

Look out, T. Rex: You have company. Balloon artist Jason Hackenworth has transformed the Peabody Museum. Photographer Judy Sirota Rosenthal took these pictures; there’s still time to visit to see it all up close.

Cityclumps, Schnapps, & Permanent War
by Regina DeAngelo | Jun 23, 2006 7:55 am
time: somewhere in the future.
The place: the underground residence of the Underwoods: Max, Sheila and Samantha.
The scenario: a war has been raging on American soil for 15 years. Survivors have moved underground into “cityclumps,” where scotch and gin flow like water but food is becoming scarce. TV is controlled by a supreme leader called The Speaker of the Day; fashions are 1950s-starched crinolines, pumps, suspenders and hats; and everyone is so terrified they can’t wipe the smiles off their faces.

Not What is Said
by Melinda Tuhus | Jun 19, 2006 8:55 am
Casual conversations are one thing, but story circles — where participants are encouraged to share their deepest feelings and their highest hopes — are something else. Alternate ROOTS — an ensemble of a dozen or so displaced actors, poets, dancers and musicians from the Gulf Coast — led several story circles as part of the Uprooted project. The highlights of Friday’s circle were captured by “graphic facilitator” Brandy Agerbeck (pictured).

Such Stuff As Dreams Are Made On
by Tess Wheelwright | Jun 19, 2006 8:15 am
Arts & Ideas entered a twenty-first-century dream world this weekend, with a high-tech version of The Tempest that starred virtual actors alongside live ones. Quebec-based Directors Michel Lemieux (right) and Victor Pilon (center) wouldn’t tell local spoken word artist Baub Bibon (left) how they cast the spell.

by Staff | Jun 15, 2006 4:23 pm | Comments (1)
The just-graduated class of Leadership Greater New Haven and Market New Haven put together a new song that aims to spread the word about a “new day in New Haven.” Will it work? Decide for yourself. Click here to watch the video (in which the above shot of New Havener Olivia Volk appears) and listen to the song. Then let us know what you think by…

The Crowd Keeps The Music Playing

Fans came onstage with umbrellas to keep klezmer mavens like bassist Nicki Parrott (pictured) dry and a sizzling, Old World-meets-New performance going at Arts & Ideas Wednesday night. It made for a memorable festival moment at a memorable concert.

“You Have To Dance!”
by Melissa Bailey | Jun 14, 2006 11:34 am | Comments (1)
These woman brought the stirring sounds of Southern Italy to the Festival of Arts & Ideas Tuesday. They charmed the crowd, jammed with special U.S. guests, and got hugs from dozens of strangers with distant Italian roots.
