May Day Benefit

by Melinda Tuhus | Mar 18, 2007 7:23 pm

Connecticut native and global troubadour David Rovics sang at a fundraising concert Thursday night at Edge of the Woods to benefit this year’s (21st annual) May Day celebration on the New Haven Green. Introduced by Paula Panzarella, who’s been the co-organizer of the event for all but two of those years, Rovics sang a dozen of his own compositions, which ranged from hysterical (“I’m a Better Anarchist Than You”) to romantic to as timely as the day’s headlines, like this song for Rachel Corrie. The fourth anniversary of her killing by an Israeli soldier driving a U.S.-funded bulldozer as she tried to protect a Palestinian’s home in Gaza was Friday, the day after the concert, and articles appeared in various media taking note of it.

Actually, it was the lobby, not the boardroom, of The Community Foundation of Greater New Haven where plots were hatched about micro-lending instead.

vag%20mon%205.jpg “‘Vagina.’  ‘Vagina.’  Doesn’t matter how many times you say it, it never sounds like a word you want to say.”  This may be true, but I have said the word “vagina” more in the past two weeks than throughout the 20 years of my life leading up to them. I’ve been talking about what people call vaginas, what vaginas smell like, how they are taken advantage of, and why we’re so scared of them.

Building Community One Story at a Time

by Melinda Tuhus | Mar 1, 2007 8:57 am

stephanie%20no%20red%20eye.JPGEver tried to remember the names of a group of ten people gathered together for the first time? It’s a daunting task, but one made easy when each person tells the story of his or her name. Like Stephanie Celeste Robinson (sometimes Sullivan), yelling to her mother, “Why did you name me Celeste?!”¬ù The Jamestown Project at Yale is holding storytelling sessions from now through June that will allow New Haveners to tell their stories, in hopes of building trust and community.
