Joe Doesn’t Live Here Anymore
by Paul Bass | Jun 28, 2007 8:24 am | Comments (2)
Protesters (including Sally Joughin, pictured) lined up on Chapel Street to protest U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman’s prominent support for not just one, but now—count ‘em—two unpopular wars.

Real, Compared To What?
by Paul Bass | Jun 22, 2007 12:18 pm | Comments (0)
The nonstop media mania of god is a dj, currently playing at the Yale Summer Cabaret, feel like it takes place on some distant planet, where cameras and turntables and screens continually record and broadcast every moment of life. Perhaps it’s an apocalyptic vision of the future merging of humans with technology. Or maybe it’s the present, and we don’t recognize that we already live on this set—where Youtube, blogs, 24-hour global capital markets and news channels, tabloid confessionals, traffic cams, blogs and the pornographication of popular culture have have destroyed intimacy and buried reality in a grave marked “Reality TV.”

Tuning in to Radio Macbeth
by Allan Appel | Jun 22, 2007 11:14 am | Comments (0)
There are enough plays whose subject is the making of plays (Michael Frayne’s Noises Off, Wallace Shawn’s Vanya on 42nd Street, and Kiss Me, Kate come immediately to mind), that it might almost be a candidate for a genre in its own right. Radio Macbeth, acclaimed director Anne Bogart and her SITI Company’s adaptation to a 1940s radio recording studio of the 1607 Will Shakespeare original, is an arresting and stylish addition. With only three performances left, there is no tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow to see it, so if you act, ‘twere better to act quickly, as Macbeth does; it’s a wise, even thrilling, Arts & Ideas offering.

Costner Shines in Mr. Brooks
by Citizen Critic | Jun 18, 2007 10:01 am | Comments (0)
By Thomas Lalli
Rating: Three stars
Playing at: Criterion Cinemas
Kevin Costner’ss title character in the current thriller Mr. Brooks is Costner’s greatest hits: he’s got the wealth of Costner in Rumor Has It, the marksmanship of
his Open Range gunman, and the follow-your-instincts code of Field of Dreams. He even makes pottery, a possible link to Dances With Wolves. And, he’s got a trait none of those can match, being a serial killer of young lovers.

Giselle Smiles—For A While
by Melinda Tuhus | Jun 17, 2007 9:21 pm | Comments (0)
I learned a few things in the one ballet class I took, at age 10. In doing those quick turns, swivel your body most of the way around, then whip your head around real fast at the last second, so it meets up with your body but doesn’t make you dizzy.
And SMILE! If you’re a female, that is. Male ballet dancers usually either glower or simper.

Networking for Business and Pleasure
by Georgia Kral | Jun 15, 2007 9:02 am | Comments (0)
The voices were consistent: Professional networking yields more than just business contacts and partnerships; social networks are also formed. That’s why Jason Watts, pictured, founded the Connecticut Urban Professionals Network (UPN).

Your Cell Phone # Is: #1
by Staff | Jun 14, 2007 10:38 am | Comments (0)
By Christopher Grobe
Standing at a bus stop, you eye the people around you, many with cell phones pressed to their ears. A couple gives you a darting glance. Storm clouds drift further away, toward the horizon. A woman down the block checks something off on her clipboard. Is she observing you? Someone whistles a song that you don’t quite recognize. When will the show begin?

Mestizo Manta Creates Heat on a Cool Day
by Georgia Kral | Jun 14, 2007 10:24 am | Comments (0)
It was cold outside, but only until the band started to play. Then some people got up off their blankets to dance while others swayed in their seats. They were stirred by Mestizo Manta, a Peruvian ensemble that specializes in “music of the Andes.”
