Behind the Burqa at Yale Rep

A woman dressed in black undulates to the distinctive tones of the Turkish saz, smiling slightly. Behind her, video projections show disorienting close-ups of—what? Skin? Limbs? At times, she seems to retreat into the dance, to disappear into herself; at others, she catches the eye of her audience and holds it. The dance has begun to crescendo—when abruptly it ends. Loosing a dismissive “tsk!” the dancer quickly pivots around and hustles upstage, away from the audience.

Undead Walk The Streets, Hungry For Brains, Beer

New Haven’s zombies came out in full force on Saturday night for Zombie Fest 2007, sponsored by the New Haven Advocate, Magic Hat and Costume Bazaar to raise money for the endangered Downtown Soup Kitchen. The Independent’s undead correspondent was on hand to create this multimedia presentation.

Richard II is a play about profound confusion. Although it mimics the form of other Shakespearean history plays—a careful mixture of throne-room scenes, battles on the field, and behind-the-scenes views of private tragedy—it is gutted of the spectacle that this mode entails.
