A Christmas Story
by felicia smuts | Dec 30, 2007 1:50 pm
As another hectic holiday season draws to a close, it’s time to sit back, take a deep breath, and laugh at how, once again, we let another “feel good celebration” drive us a little bit crazy. Whether it was the fruitless search for the Wii, the mindless drone of yet another especially chipper Christmas song, or a grease fire that ruined the turkey, now more than ever most of us are in need of a real holiday. But before the trees get dumped on the curb, the lights are thrown into a box for next year’s tangled mess melt down, and the brand new cashmere sweaters pill, take a look around the small neighborhood streets at the flashing lights and blow-up Santas in the distance. For this truly is the season to celebrate what Americans do best; flagrant displays of one-up-man-ship, the seamless amalgamation of the sacred with the secular, and vast amounts of energy wasting lawn ornaments, all in the name of “Christmas cheer.”

Chatham Square, “Through A Child’s Eyes”
by Amy Larkin Gelbach | Dec 21, 2007 8:44 am | Comments (5)
Maybe I’ve been going to the wrong art openings, but I have never met an artist’s extended family, had an artist stick their tongue out at me, or received a personal tour of an artist’s entire showing — while holding their hand. Last night all three of these delightful occurrences happened within 30 minutes. I was also given a candy cane and told I was pretty by an artist in a fancy party dress and pigtails.
Not to mention – the art was good. And not just good. Inspiring.

Art on the Bathroom Walls
by felicia smuts | Dec 11, 2007 8:53 am | Comments (1)
After all the excitement and frenzy of Open Studios, Artspace has settled down with an appealing, if disjointed, array of exhibits. The intricate patterns and vibrant colors of Rachel Hellerch’s “Emerald Ethereal” greet visitors as they come through the lounge, offering a pop-oriental escape from the weary grays and browns of New Haven’s streets. The various artists of the Juror’s Choice exhibit run the gauntlet of contemporary art in styles and materials.

Hundreds Honor Arts Shakers
by Allan Appel | Dec 10, 2007 9:53 pm
“When I was growing up in the ‘40s and ‘50s, New Haven was a must-stop place for theater and lots else,” said jazz musician and Neighborhood Music School teacher Jesse Hameen II, one of the six recipients of the 2007Arts Council awards for being movers and shakers of the Elm City arts scene. A sold-out crowd of nearly 300 appreciators gathered at the Lawn Club Friday afternoon to shake it up for the shakers.

Molière, No Holds Barred
by christopher grobe | Dec 9, 2007 12:59 pm
French classical comedy is usually a drama of the superego. Guarded and aloof, characters float around the stage revealing their passions more often with a raised eyebrow or an off-color metaphor than with anything as gauche as a raised voice. The Yale Repertory Theatre’s current production of Molière’s Tartuffe is decidedly not of that ilk. Instead, director Daniel Fish hands this version over completely to the primal chaos of the raving id.

Fest Revisits Bradbury’s Vision
by Allan Appel | Dec 6, 2007 7:21 am | Comments (2)
Get ready to break out those old college copies of Fahrenheit 451, New Haven. In that 1953 sci-fi classic anti-intellectualism reigns, books are burned, and most folks seem happy enough to walk around with in-ear entertainment systems. Sound familiar?

Judge Spares Engineer In Oil Dumping Scheme
by Melissa Bailey | Dec 4, 2007 7:00 am
Eight months in Connecticut were punishment enough for a white-haired Greek sailor who squandered his one last romance with the sea by colluding in scheme to dump oil overboard.
