Is “Freedom” Worth $5,000?

With $40,000 from the state, the city will hire a consultant to look into creating a waterfront exhibit on the Connecticut Freedom Trail. The city will kick in $5,000 in bonding to make it happen—too high a price for one alderman.

‘Read-In’ Celebrates Black Voices

Instead, they spent it together at the Stetson Library. Credit the change of plans to President Barack Obama—not to mention Malcolm X, Phyllis Wheatley, and a range of other influential African-Americans.

Kadiatou Meets Venture Smith

Allan Appel Photo He was only a boy around 8 when he was brought as a slave to New England. At the same age she came with her family as immigrants to New York and then New Haven. Now an eighth-grader, Kadiatou Diallo discovered she and a freed slave and Colonial American success story named Venture Smith just might hail from the same part of Africa, Guinea, some 280 years apart.

Negro Leaguers Return To The Spotlight

Those heroes have been brought back to life in New Haven thanks to some artists who feel they, too, are playing in a segregated league.

Judge Angela Robinson commiserated and counseled her that one of the glories of our legal system is how hard the prosecutor must labor to overcome the presumption of innocence.
