The Claw That Ate New Haven
by Kara Arsenault | Oct 31, 2005 7:27 pm | Comments (2)
Thirty-five years ago, officials broke ground at the future site of the New Haven Coliseum. Monday, in front of a small crowd dotted with white hard hats, part of the rusty relic fell to the ground, marking the beginning of the end of the New Haven institution which rocked for more than 30 years with hockey brawls, raucous concerts and dunking Globetrotters.

Anybody Home?
by Paul Bass | Oct 31, 2005 9:55 am | Comments (2)
Has John DeStefano become an “absentee mayor” too busy running for governor, as his opponents charge in this fall’s campaign? Or is he working as hard as ever to get the job done? Judge for yourself by taking a look at the mayor’s daily schedule.

City Hall: The Data on How He’s Still Getting the Job Done
by Paul Bass | Oct 31, 2005 9:23 am
He might be running all over the state. But he’s still getting the job done at home.
That’s the message of Mayor John DeStefano’s press office. In response to a request to review the mayor’s daily schedule, it provided a list of what it called the mayor’s accomplishments since his latest term began in January 2004 (and, in a few cases, since he originally took office in 1993). Highlights:

Case Closed, Sort Of
by Paul Bass | Oct 31, 2005 7:43 am | Comments (1)
The head of a not-for-profit agency in town said Monday she has paid all the back money owed to undocumented workers who helped build new artist housing in Westville. The workers walked off the job after charging that a subcontractor exploited their illegal status to avoid paying them.

Freedom’s Flag Flies
by Kara Arsenault | Oct 30, 2005 9:28 am
As the president entered the room on Saturday, a two-man band played “Hail to the Chief.” He addressed the crowd from a podium covered with a small piece of cardboard and American flag stamps. Everyone wore rose-colored glasses. The president’s message to the public? No comment…in light of the ongoing investigation, of course.
This press conference had nothing to do with “Scooters” or Supreme Court speculation. This was about art, the compliant press, and french fries. The staged question-and-answer session was part of Artspace’s City-Wide Open Studios, the month-long arts festival that comes to a close Sunday.

Immigrant vs. Immigrant
by Paul Bass | Oct 28, 2005 3:04 pm
New lofts for artists are going up in Westville. Some of the undocumented workers hired for the job say their boss stiffed them, taking advantage of their fears of being deported. Their Jamaican-born boss denies it and claims he’s being hassled because he’s black. Call it an immigrant tale — or an immigrant vs. immigrant tale — about how modern-day cities are rebuilt.

No, “Mamacita”!
by Paul Bass | Oct 28, 2005 2:24 pm
This is a family website, so we won’t show you the rest of this centerfold in the latest issue of Registro, the New Haven Register-published Spanish-language weekly newspaper. Let’s just say that Latino organizations have seen the full page. They’re disgusted, and livid.
