by Melinda Tuhus | Feb 24, 2006 9:24 am | Comments (2)
The 3,500 workers on strike at Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation—including New Haven Aldermen Tom Lehtonen and Robert Lee—are picketing over what is becoming the number-one challenge for workers and business owners alike: the ever-increasing cost of health care.

Proto: Friendship Is Stronger Than War
by Dan Levine | Feb 23, 2006 5:50 pm
New Haven labor leader Bob Proto joined a huge labor rally today endorsing New Haven’s Joe Lieberman for reelection as U.S. senator. Proto acknowledged that Lieberman’s stance on the war in Iraq differs from his membership’s. But, he said, “our culture is to endorse folks who have stood side by side with us.” Lieberman faces a spirited challenge from the left from fellow Democrat Ned Lamont. Click here to read more.
DeStefano Tackles Altieri Controversy
by Paul Bass | Feb 23, 2006 1:30 pm | Comments (1)
For 12 years New Haven Mayor John DeStefano saw no problem in hiring his budget chief under an unconventional law-skirting arrangement that made him a “contractor” rather than technically a city official. Now DeStefano (pictured Thursday receiving tips on working an excavator at an oil-tank destruction ceremony) said he no longer finds a “compelling reason” for the arrangement — so he’s changing it. That means budget chief Frank Altieri may leave city government.

Cop Shot; Cop Shoots Back
by Paul Bass | Feb 22, 2006 1:54 pm | Comments (3)
A 37 year-old New Haven man was under police guard and in critical condition in Yale-New Haven Hospital Wednesday after an early-morning shoot-out with a cop. The cop, Paul Kenney, a 17-year veteran of the force, suffered only minor injuries. The state police are investigating. At a press conference, state police spokesman Paul Vance (at right in photo) and New Haven Chief Cisco Ortiz (center) described a bizarre incident in which the man rode on a bicycle up to the cop at a construction site and started shooting for no apparent reason.

Moms Push For Dental Fix
by Melinda Tuhus | Feb 22, 2006 10:33 am | Comments (3)
Imagine having a toothache and waiting six months to see a dentist. While their children (like the Crenshaw twins and Ashley Agosto, in photo) played in a side room, moms told stories like that to State Sen. Toni Harp as they organize to fix a problem—the fact that the state pays dentists only a third of their customary rate to treat families on Medicaid.

by Tess Wheelwright | Feb 22, 2006 9:16 am
A neighborhood teen center? A citywide youth summit? A “Teen Caf√©”? People in Dwight (including Gina Calder, pictured) tossed around those ideas for kids — and separate ideas about neighborhood safety — in a church basement Tuesday night.
