Did Rell “Pull a Clinton”?
by Paul Bass | Mar 29, 2006 2:49 pm | Comments (6)
An aide to Gov. Jodi Rell suggested sending “an obnoxous mascot named ‘car tax Charlie’” to hector and hound Democrats who oppose her plan to eliminate property taxes on cars. Another informal informant suggested that the governor “pull a Clinton” and “co-opt” gubernatorial challenger John DeStefano’s ideas for economic development. Those suggestions surface in a review by the Independent of the e-mail files of Lisa Moody (pictured), Rell’s chief of staff. How much of the advice did Rell follow up on?

Escape From Death
by Melissa Bailey | Mar 29, 2006 11:34 am
“If they had put their hand on my heart, they would have stopped me — it was pumping like a water pump!”
So recalled Isaac Newton Kinity, sitting in his Elm Street apartment in New Haven, of his escape across the border of Kenya after his defiant union and anti-corruption work drew death threats.

Rizzo Passes Inspection
by Tess Wheelwright | Mar 29, 2006 9:45 am | Comments (4)
After a day’s work of leading a media entourage through apartment inspections in the kick-off of a landlord-licensing program three years in the making, all LCI chief Andrew Rizzo (pictured earlier in the day) showed up in City Hall Monday night to field some tough questions about the program from aldermen. “Is it unconstitutional?” asked Westville Alderwoman Ina Silverman.

Aldermen Grilled, Grill on Budget
by Tess Wheelwright | Mar 29, 2006 9:30 am | Comments (1)
“You’re killing us out there!” was the message from Curtis Uqdah-Jennings (pictured) and other upset citizens who turned up in the aldermanic chambers Tuesday night to say: Don’t raise our property taxes. What else, then? asked aldermen faced with a proposed city budget increase. Start charging for trash pick-up? Stop promoting cops? Sell a golf course?

Latinos Make Influence Felt
by Paul Bass | Mar 29, 2006 9:00 am
Latinos are making their influence felt in this year’s gubernatorial race. Latest evidence: Wednesday the two Democratic candidates will appear at a debate in North Haven sponsored by the Progreso Latino Fund, a new nonpartisan empowerment group. Meanwhile, the DeStefano for Governor campaign organized an “Amigos de DeStefano” event for 90 Latino activists from 11 towns in Fair Haven Saturday night. (Click here to read the release.) Other politically active Latinos, part of another new group called the Connecticut Hispanic Democratic Caucus, have united behind DeStefano’s opponent, Dannel Malloy, in response to DeStefano supporting a white candidate against a Latino incumbent for New Haven Board of Aldermen president. Latinos represent the fastest growing ethnic group in Connecticut; their emerging political clout could attract more attention to issues like immigration and health care.

On the first day of an ambitious new citywide inspection effort, LCI’s Rafael Ramos (above) discovered that the smoke alarm needed a new battery in a first-floor apartment at 80 Howe St. “Am I supposed to check that?” asked the tenant, Christine Oh.

Hold That Note!
by Tess Wheelwright | Mar 28, 2006 5:04 pm
“Now smile really tight, and blow. Loosen up, blow again,” music teacher William Freeman instructed two principals and the superintendent of schools Tuesday. And for the flashing cameras of the two corporate sponsors paying for music education at two New Haven schools and promising another $50,000 for two more, they did.
