Crossing Guards Get Their Due

by Melissa Bailey | Mar 31, 2006 1:33 pm

They get heckled by speed demons. They get up at 6 a.m. to stand in the ice and snow. They haven’t had a pay raise in five years. But the city’s crossing guards like Cea-Cea Gilchrist (pictured with some of her adoring charges) — who were honored in a ceremony at the Hall of Records Friday — still go out every day and protect schoolkids from getting crushed.

The Last Good-Bye

by Tess Wheelwright | Mar 30, 2006 2:53 pm

Tyrone Reece was counting on two more days to say goodbye to fellow Winchester workers and plan a send-off gathering for Friday, the day the U.S. Repeating Arms plant said it was closing its doors. Instead, Thursday morning he came by the plant one more time to pick up his final check — and plan some fishing.

Before candidates for governor spoke at a first-ever debate on Latino issues, the room bustled with the chatter of 200 leaders from around the state. Their message: It’s high time Latinos got involved. “We feel that without actively participating in the political process, our voices can’t be heard,” said Frances Padilla (pictured), one of the event’s organizers.

by Gone Dishin' | Mar 30, 2006 10:25 am

United Illuminating and the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce offered a warm Connecticut welcome to Jim Forgerson, the new president of UIL holdings (pictured at left beside his predecessor). The gracious hosts lit the room (pun intended) Tuesday night with community leaders from throughout their service area. Sage presented the most extraordinary array of food and dessert offerings that has been seen in a long time. Dave McCoart is a truly professional host; with a view of Long Island Sound and impeccable service, New Haven was shown in its very best light.

Candidates Back Immigrants, Split on NCLB

by Melissa Bailey | Mar 30, 2006 7:01 am

Discussing a bill that would legalize millions of undocumented immigrant workers, the two candidates for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination told a Latino audience at a debate Wednesday night that they are on the immigrants’ side. “The federal government discriminates against these folks after allowing them to arrive,” said New Haven Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. (pictured) as he faced off against Dannel Malloy. A new difference emerged between the candidates: their stances on the No Child Left Behind Act and standardized testing.
