As Unexplainable As Life Itself
by Regina DeAngelo | Apr 28, 2006 10:26 am
Much has happened in 400 years. Thursday night, some of Yale’s best New Music composers played for us what we’ve been missing as New Music New Haven gave its last concert of the year at Sprague Hall.

Broadway Material
by Allan Appel | Apr 28, 2006 10:15 am | Comments (2)
The Wexler-Grant School may be located at Foote and Dixwell, but last night it lifted itself right to fabled Broadway (and we don’t mean the one in New Haven) with African Tales, a multi-media theatrical extravaganza complete with towering puppets, African animal huts and masks, and a stage full of energetic and authentic African dancing and drumming, all produced by the school’s drama club. It wowed a cheering audience of more than 200 proud parents, siblings, and friends.

Can Health Care Win?
by Melissa Bailey | Apr 28, 2006 8:41 am
“The number one issue that he understands is health care,” said Communications Workers of America Local 1298 President William Henderson (pictured) Thursday as he threw his union’s endorsement to John DeStefano for governor. Will DeStefano’s universal health care plan be, as his campaign desires, the issue to mobilize voters to the polls? Union leaders, citing carpal tunnel syndrome, burdensome premiums and denied sick leave, said “yes.”

“They Want To Talk About Turf Wars”

Aldermen who held an open youth forum were surprised when a flood of pre-teens and younger kids poured in. And they were more surprised when those kids, some as young as 6 or 7 years old, opened their mouths. “I expected them to talk about playgrounds,” said Alderman Jorge Perez. “They want to talk about turf wars!”

How To Help

Curtis Hill rescues people’s old computers. Through his organization Concepts for Adaptive Learning, Hill puts them in the hands of hundreds of children in urban families who might not otherwise connect to the grid. He needs more. So do the kids. Have a computer you’re not using anymore? If it still works, contact Hill by e-mail or call him at 410-3679. And if your not-for-profit has a specific need for volunteers or donors, contact us here and we’ll list it.
Not Random, Just Stupid
by Melissa Bailey | Apr 27, 2006 12:01 pm
Despite inital rumors, the 21-year-old city woman fatally shot in Dwight-Kensington Wednesday was “not a random individual caught in the crossfire,” said Police Chief Cisco Ortiz Thursday (pictured) at a press conference. Police said Kendraya Glasper was shot in the chest by a man who was just plain “reckless” in handling a big, expensive gun.

Gone Dishin’ In a MADD, MADD World of Men, Women, Boys & Girls
by Gone Dishin' | Apr 27, 2006 11:24 am
One of the joys of a city like New Haven is the ability to maintain long-term friendships and ties to people and institutions. Intergenerational loyalties to families and institutions may be one of the reasons for our strength as a community. This attribute is especially true in the Italian community and those of us fortunate enough to be considered “Family” in spite of our genetic ethnic origins. Monday night’s events were illustrative of this phenomenon. Fortunately, Anthony’s and Bella Notte are facilities within close proximity to each other, allowing some of the participants to support both.
