Cop Of The Week
by Paul Bass | May 30, 2006 9:53 am
David Coppola had never heard of the “broken windows” theory of policing when he followed up a routine call at the Farnam Court projects. He ended up putting that theory into practice anyway — preventing bigger problems in the neighborhood, and running into one weird drug dealer.

Sleep in on a holiday? Not the Meade family. They wanted to grab this spot at Lighthouse Point Park.

What DeJesus Would Do
by Tess Wheelwright | May 29, 2006 3:17 pm | Comments (1)
“I’m Hispanic and you’re white. Let’s assume that I’m more highly educated than you, and have more money. All the same: If we went in with toothaches, you’d get the better pain medication. If we’re men with testicular cancer, I’m the one who’s going to have the testicle removed.” Read on for thoughts from Jeannette DeJesus, launcher of a new Latino health policy institute, on why at the doctor’s, race matters.

Tenants Move Back In To Better Digs
by Tess Wheelwright | May 29, 2006 1:08 pm | Comments (2)
After two years of “major gut rehab,” a beautified Katharine Harvey Terrace stands ready for re-occupation. Public housing officials like Julie Fagan (third from left, behind) said they couldn’t have done it without resident activists like Lou West (at right). West agreed.

Traffic Tickets Go Up $10. Will Safety Improve?
by Melinda Tuhus | May 29, 2006 12:57 pm | Comments (2)
Starting July 1, that $114 ticket for running a red light will cost you $124. The extra ten bucks will go into the city’s coffers. Some people think —” or hope —” the extra cash will motivate local police departments to step up enforcement of moving violations on city streets. That would improve safety for everyone, especially those using non-motorized transportation (like this pedestrian, skateboarder and cyclist shown at a downtown intersection). Others aren’t convinced.

Readmobile Revs Back Up
by | May 26, 2006 5:04 pm
What is more convenient than the four branches of the New Haven Public Library? The fifth miniature branch of the library system that comes to you. New Haven’s Readmobile is back on the road, and it made its first stop this week at Katherine Brennan Elementary School.

Gone Dishin’ With The Young Crowd
by Gone Dishin' | May 26, 2006 4:54 pm
As the season of annual meetings and finger foods winds down, we can reflect on the achievements and impact that each organization, agency and institution has had in improving lives in our Greater New Haven Community. We have come to expect accountability and measurable results for our charitable dollars; we want to know how they are leveraged; we want to feel good about ourselves! We never felt better about ourselves and the future than we did on Thursday night, at the Bank of America Community Room, at the year-end festivities of The Youth Philanthropy Project, a United Way initiative.

Lamont Crushes Lieberman, 85 to 14
by Paul Bass | May 26, 2006 1:16 pm | Comments (1)
Ned Lamont crushed Joe Lieberman in a primary for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate, 85 to 14 percent. It wasn’t the actual primary that the party holds Aug. 8. It was an online primary run by MoveOn.org. Does it matter?

Gone Arts Dishin’
by Gone Dishin' | May 26, 2006 8:51 am
There is no doubt that New Haven is the creative capital of Connecticut. The designation is due, in no small part, to the incredible work of the Arts Council of Greater New Haven. In fostering a regional arts community, in collaboration with Market New Haven, the Town Green Special Services District, the Office of Cultural Affairs of the City, the Chamber of Commerce, the Convention and Visitors Bureau, Yale’s Office of New Haven and State Affairs, it has become integral to the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism. In its 46th year, the organization boasts of the inroads that have been made in stabilizing and ensuring the viability of our major arts organizations and institutions while continuing to increase services to area artists and focusing on audience development and appreciation.
