An Energizer Bus-Stop Protest Keeps Going
by Melinda Tuhus | Jun 29, 2006 10:13 am | Comments (3)
On the eighth anniversary of the removal of five downtown bus stops, a group of New Haveners (some of whom are pictured at left) marked the occasion with a sit-in on the steps of City Hall. Several of the stops have been restored in the past two years, but not the one at Church and Chapel. These folks want it back, but the city administration has moved on —” to something better, it promises.

East Rock Block Takeback
by Melissa Bailey | Jun 29, 2006 9:44 am | Comments (12)
After a couple was held up at gunpoint while taking a nighttime stroll on East Rock’s Lawrence Street, they decided not to slip away as lone victims of a random crime. The result: A crowd of 60 neighbors gathered at a block party Wednesday to share stories, talk to police and revive dormant block watches near where the mugging occurred.

by Paul Bass | Jun 28, 2006 2:49 pm | Comments (2)
In the wake of a police raid on undocumented workers that contradicted City Hall’s promises to immigrants and sent tenants fleeing from their home, Mayor John DeStefano Wednesday said he’s ordering a new written policy to prevent such incidents in the future.

Gone Dishin’ For a Soapbox
by Gone Dishin' | Jun 28, 2006 10:14 am
There’s a time to “dish,” a time to “rap” and a time for some “straight talk.” And then there is always the story telling, the perfect segue for having seen Junebug Productions’ two shows last Friday night and Saturday. Author and actor John O’Neal, in “Don’t Start Me to Talking or I’ll Tell You Everything I Know…” was thoroughly engaging. His performance is a wonderful introduction to this theatrical genre.

Puerto Ricans, Si! Other Latinos, Si!
by Melinda Tuhus | Jun 28, 2006 9:23 am | Comments (2)
Puerto Ricans, whether they live on the island or in the U.S., are American citizens. How might they relate to the issue of immigration? It’s complicated, and to understand it better, the Progreso Latino Fund of the Community Foundation held a forum Tuesday night at the Blake Street Caf√©, moderated by consultant and former TV reporter Diane Alverio (pictured). Solidarity reigned, more or less.

DeStefano to Blogosphere: What’s Up?
by Tess Wheelwright | Jun 28, 2006 9:16 am | Comments (2)
A steadily improving blogger, Democratic gubernatorial candidate John DeStefano was at his loosest yet during a 20-minute live-blogging stint on MyLeftNutmeg.com Tuesday —” dropping pronouns, making jabs in parenthetical asides, and thanking fans with plenty of exclamation points. In fact, the technology couldn’t keep up with him: He resorted to this old-school communication tool to ask, What’s the hold-up?

Still “The Site We Want”
by Melissa Bailey | Jun 28, 2006 9:07 am | Comments (1)
Facing a continuing legal battle and a possible two-year delay in finding a new home for the city’s highest-achieving school, aldermen met in City Hall Tuesday to consider options. Should we fish around for other sites for the new Worthington Hooker School, or use our new zoning powers to re-zone the desired site on Whitney Avenue? The conclusion from the city’s confident lawyers and school official (pictured): Let’s stick to our guns.
