Downtown Love Made Permanent
by Melissa Bailey | Aug 30, 2006 9:32 am
Under the shelter of City Hall, away from the drizzling rain, Maggie Rivera and Sitou Malick traded rings and wedding vows Tuesday. Malick moved to West Haven from Mali, in western Africa. Rivera’s from New Haven. The two met at the beginning of this year in a Church Street Dunkin’ Donuts shop, where Malick was working. “She really appreciated the way I made the coffee — she kept asking for my name.” They went out a couple of times for drinks — not coffee — and “the chemistry started flowing,” said Malick. His family stood by to snap photos of the couple under a wedding arch while a justice of the peace led them through their vows. Later, there would be a party with dancing and African food. “Today’s a very special day,” said Malick.
An “Astonishing” First Verse

Dublin and New Haven have, these days, more in common than one might expect, beginning with a lively downtown scene animated by the presence of a large number of young people. But perhaps in the very long run the most important connection will turn out to be the arrival here of a first-class Irish literary talent, Barry McCrea (pictured), who focuses on all this material in his debut novel, The First Verse. School Budget Battle Brews
by Melissa Bailey | Aug 29, 2006 3:08 pm
You can’t expect New Haven schools to reach state goals when they’re “grossly underfunded,” charged Dianne Kaplan deVries (at right) at a public meeting at City Hall. With the city’s financial backing, her advocacy group is suing the state over “inadequate” funding for public education. Meanwhile, deVries butted heads with ConnCAN director Alex Johnston (at left) over the best way to redistribute the “pittance” in existing funds.

The Real New Haven of the Midwest
by Staff | Aug 29, 2006 10:55 am | Comments (1)
Andy Horowitz (he runs the New Haven Oral History Project) had just returned from a 10,000-mile, 27-state road trip around the U.S. when he read the Independent’s story about the alleged “New Haven of the Midwest.” Horowitz’s travels took him through the real New Haven of the Midwest, a sleepy town in northeastern Iowa. He brought back these photos and this report.

Katrina’s Responders, A Year Later
by Melinda Tuhus | Aug 29, 2006 8:45 am
Megan Finn (top photo) and her family, washed out of New Orleans, parked in New Haven — and stayed. Like many New Haveners moved by the tragedy, Frank and Paula Panzarella (middle photo) travelled to New Orleans to help people rebuild; then they returned home to raise money and consciousness here. Sheila Allen Bell (bottom photo) tried to figure out how to welcome refugees to town. A year after Hurricane Katrina unleashed its fury on the Big Easy, here’s a look at how some New Haveners new and old responded.

No Holds Barred in HIV Prevention
by Melinda Tuhus | Aug 28, 2006 9:29 am
“We told them everything. We didn’t sugar-coat anything,” Justin AugustÃn said of the way he and other youth trainers talked to young people about the sexual transmission of HIV. They used visual aids (held by team member Mykeda Rogers, 20, of New Haven) to demonstrate how to put on male and female condoms. Members of the team finished their eight-week program with a celebration on Friday at AIDS Project New Haven.
