Responding to youth violence he saw on his beat in the Dixwell neighborhood, city cop Shafiq Abdussabur launched a program called CTRIBAT for 6 to 15 year-old boys in the neighborhood. Its events ranged from camping to a prison visit to tough talk about guns. A report being released Monday shows the results: The 55 kids involved this past summer had no problems with the law. And gun-related violence in general went down in the neighborhood. The data, and more findings, are in the report; click here to read it.

Joan Channick, the newly appointed managing director at Long Wharf Theatre, was the guest of honor at Sage. David Silverstone, president of the Regional Water Authority, was the evening’s master of ceremonies, representing the other hosts.

Fair Haven Learns About An ID for Life

As Laura Huizar, the program coordinator for economic development at JUNTA, greeted one of the nearly 100 people who came to the auditorium of the Fair Haven Middle School on Thursday night for a meeting with Mexican consular officials, the tragic death of Manuel Santiago was not far from her mind. “What happened to him,” she told a reporter, referring to immigrants’ vulnerability to crime because many do not have sufficient ID to open bank accounts, “is reflective of a much larger problem in Fair Haven.”
