They’re Champs
by Staff | Nov 29, 2006 2:48 pm | Comments (1)
In a “game worthy of ESPN,” New Haven’s Steelers — the football team of local 12 to 16-year-olds — won the Pop Warner Super Bowl Tournament in Rhode Island thanks to a 30-yard pass in the last 21 seconds. Local cop and community youth organizer Shafiq Abdussabur was there and sent back both this written account of the game and the photos that follow.
The team needs to raise $34,000 to attend the national “Super Bowl Play Down” in Florida; some of their families have trouble coming up with the dough. Send contributions to Pop Warner Midgets, c/o Melvin Wells, 181 Tanglewood Drive Hamden, CT 06518.

Finding the Hola in Shalom
by Linda Cuckovich | Nov 29, 2006 1:20 pm

“Las papas son ricas! The potatoes are delicious!” exclaimed Juanita Perez, a resident at the Casa Oto√ɬ±al senior citizens center, as she brandished a latke. All the guests would probably agree that latkes were the biggest hit, as Latino seniors, and many of their kids and grandkids, celebrated Hanukah a little early with Jewish people of all ages in a return favor involving a cross-cultural and cross-language friendship budding in New Haven.

Doris Rogan (pictured), brought up to be a “very good girl,” made history by bringing her sleeping bag, uninvited, into a Yale official’s office. She and her compatriots were honored as heroes at an event calling for a new pension fight.

Bereaved Families Promote Peace

Families who have lost loved ones on both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are the ones who know each other’s pain most intimately. Five hundred of them have come together to call for peace and reconciliation, like Israeli Robi Damelin (pictured), who spoke at Yale Law School Tuesday night.

Violence Outbreak Leaves Personal Tragedies
by Staff | Nov 28, 2006 3:09 pm

A rash of violent encounters, all apparently unrelated, left a common trail of poignant, sometimes irony-tinged personal tragedies Tuesday. A 14-year-old girl lay in a hospital bed after being shot shortly after moving to town. The son of a police commissioner was recovering from a shot to his throat in a robbery. A “cop of the week“ (lower of the two pictures above) known for sharp-eyed snags of criminals was in the hospital with serious injuries after a car chase. And a volunteer who works with Dixwell kids, and spoke at a youth’s funeral this summer, now prepares to speak at his own son’s funeral. Click here to read Melissa Bailey’s report from police headquarters rounding up all the incidents from a tragedy-packed 24 hours. Click here to read Paul Bass’s interview with grieving dad Doug Bethea (pictured at top) at a dining-room table on Ashmun Street. Clilck here to listen to Bethea discuss his next moves.

What Can Be Done About UI’s 38% Hike?
by Paul Bass | Nov 28, 2006 11:40 am | Comments (9)
State Sen. Martin Looney originally tried to stop state deregulation of electric utilities. In the wake of UI’s Thanksgiving surprise — a 38 percent rate hike — he and other leaders promise to press for answers about how to fix the disaster.
