On the eve of a fateful state regulatory meeting, several dozen protesters rallied outside the Church Street headquarters of the United Illuminating Company to decry the company’s announced gigantic rate hike, which climbed in short order from 38 percent to 45 percent to 50 percent for residential customers. Jake Weinstein was up on stilts over it.

Man Dies Fleeing Cops

A man with a criminal record and a loaded gun in the car died in a car crash as he sped away from traffic cops Saturday at 10:25 p.m., according to police. When DUI enforcement cops tried to pull him over, the driver allegedly sped away, running a red light and crashing into a vehicle at Church Street South and Union Avenue. The driver, 22 year-old Melvin Ledbetter, eventually died of injuries sustained during the crash. His passenger, a 23 year-old city man, was arrested for gun possession. He and the driver of the other car were treated for non life-threatening injuries.

Hill Health Aims For African-Americans’ Hearts

Hill Health Aims to Reduce Heart Disease in African Americans

Carleen Elliott (at right in photo) has been trying to manage her diabetes for the past 15 years, and it’s been a struggle. Since becoming a patient at Hill Health Center three years ago, she’s learned better ways to cope. Now, a new $150,000 grant that targets outreach to African Americans, who are at high risk for heart disease, stroke, and precursors to those diseases, such as diabetes, is going to help her and others even more.
