A Grander Q River Park Imagined

David Tankoos of Clifton Street was one of some two dozen people who toured Quinnipiac River Park trying to imagine what might transform the fine spate of grass and waterfront into the park of his dreams. He suggested more color, with perhaps planters of flowers placed beside this impressive but lonely rock.

HANH OKs Budgets In “Insane” Process

Racing to meet Aug. 1 deadlines, the housing authority’s Board of Commissioners approved a $22 million projected budget for low-income public housing units and $41million for their Section 8 program, and they took in-house the day-to-day maintenance and management of their full portfolio of 189 units of scattered-site housing.

Reading, Math Scores Rise

The Board of Ed got its report card Friday in the form of state standardized-testing results, and Principal Cheryl W. Brown (pictured) was a star pupil: Her third-graders’ reading scores shot up 24 percent.

Immigrants continued filling City Hall Friday to obtain the new Elm City Residency Card, as applications topped 1,150
The mayor announced permanently extended hours for the office issuing the ID cards, as a second bank pledged its support for the first-in-the-nation program. Click here for Melissa Bailey’s report.

Second Bank Supports ID; Hours Extended

As the number of applicants surpassed 1,000 and the line once again filed out the door of City Hall Friday, a second bank gave its pledge of support for the city’s immigrant-friendly ID program and the mayor announced indefinitely extended sign-up hours.

West Rock Master Developer Approved

Calling it an exciting new chapter in the evolution of West Rock, which was once the site of the colonial alms house, the housing authority Friday chose a master developer for a $144 million remaking of the Brookside and Rockview housing projects.

Porch Shooting

A victim was on the porch of 26 Carmel St. in Beaver Hills at 12:02 a.m. Thursday when gunshots flew, piercing the victim’s right thigh. Police found two shell casings at the scene, from different caliber guns.
Read on for more crime details, according to city spokeswoman Jessica Mayorga.
A victim was on Dixwell Avenue near Bassett Street at 12:24 a.m. Thursday when a male teen approached on a bike, displaying a silver revolver. He took $84 and a cell phone. The perp, described as a tall, thin 15-year-old wearing a Yankees hat, fled on his bike.
And someone broke into Josie’s Big Apple Beauty Supplies store at 117 Whalley Ave. before 1:54 a.m. Thursday. Thieves ransacked the register, but found only $21.
Ortiz Delivers Message By Bike

Police Chief Ortiz has taken to neighborhood streets on two wheels to promise New Haven more bike cops and to hear what’s on people’s minds. In Dixwell, he got an earful, including complaints about disrespectful policing.
