(Updated with Fasano response to Harp’s response.) As city police, firefighters, and other emergency responders tended to waves of overdoses primarily on the New Haven Green on Wednesday and Thursday, a leading suburban Republican legislator provoked a firestorm of his own with a statement blaming the city for allowing the Green to deteriorate to the point that so many overdoses would occur.
Mayor Toni Harp, local Rev. Steven Cousin, and New Haven State Sen. Martin Looney came out swinging in response. Their statements (all written, except for the mayor’s which were delivered at a press conference) follow:

Angel remembers going to a Hartford gas station with his friends in 2010 to try out a new legal drug called K2.
Eight years later, as a bad batch of the synthetic cannabinoid has resulted in over 80 overdoses primarily on the New Haven Green over the past two days, Angel said he’s grateful that he didn’t stick with K2.

At least some of the K2 smokers who overdosed on the Green the past two days — who now number well into the 80s — received bags of a bad batch of the synethic drug from a dealer possibly looking to hook new customers.

The Committee of the Proprietors of the Common and Undivided Lands at New Haven, which has owned the New Haven Green since the 17th century and contracts with the city’s parks department to maintain it, released the following statement regarding Wednesday’s and Thursday’s overdoses on the Green.
The recent overdoses of dozens of people on the Green over the course of a day has brought to the forefront a growing national problem that has also hit New Haven: the drug epidemic.
