The police reported two separate stabbings — one involving money, the other an ex-boyfriend.
Here’s what happened, according to police spokesman Officer David Hartman:
One stabbing according around 3 a.m. Monday. A 19-year-old man said his girlfriend called to say her 21-year-old ex-boyfriend had broken into her Fair Haven apartment. He showed up to the address, and the ex approached him while he was in his car. After “a minute-long argument,” the ex “pulled a kitchen-knife and stabbed him in his shoulder.”
The victim approached Officer Michael Fumiatti (pictured), who was parked at Blatchley Avenue and Exchange Street. Fumiatti went to the address, where “a group of men remained outside. That is all but one. The accused was slowly walking away.”
The accused ex-boyfriend refused Fumiatti’s gunpoint order to stop. Fumiatti feared the man “was still armed with the knife.” He “took him to the ground and after a struggle, handcuffed the uncooperative man.”
Witnesses backed up the victim’s story. Police recovered the knife and charged that ex with assault, burglary, threatening and breach of peace charges.
The other stabbing occurred Saturday afternoon at an apartment on Quinnipiac Avenue. The victim, a 25-year-old man stabbed behind his ear and on his back, neck and shoulders, identified the alleged attacker to police. Police arrested the suspect on assault and reckless endangerment charges. In his interview with police, the suspect “said the victim owed him 12 bucks but didn’t remember stabbing him.”
In both cases the injuries suffered by the victims were described as non-life-threatening.
Meanwhile Monday, police arrested a second suspect in connection with a robbery-murder at a grocery in Bridgeport — the second of two suspects who are also people of interest in the investigation of a recent murder of a convenience store cashier in New Haven.
Officer Fummiati is really good at his job of community policing--he listens, approaches people with the utmost respect and he gets things done--New Haven should hold on to him as long as it can. He also lives in New Haven to the last of my knowledge, big plus since he is willing to live in the community where he works.
