Assaults Cap Violent Month In Fair Haven

Two violent assaults occurred within minutes—and blocks—from each other on Thursday night. The second landed a 57-year-old man in the hospital with a fractured skull.
The two assaults were the latest in a month of 15 violent street robberies in Fair Haven.
Here’s what happened Thursday, according to police spokesman Officer Joe Avery:
At 7:15 p.m. three masked men approached a man at the corner of Exchange and Lloyd Streets. They assaulted him with a metal object, possibly the butt of a gun. He was struck on the head and face. The men stole the victim’s groceries and $4.
Ten minutes later, a 57-year-old man was assaulted near the corner of Ferry and Saltonstall Streets. Three or four men attacked him, but stole nothing. He suffered a fractured skull and was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he was listed in fair condition as of Friday afternoon.
Avery said on Friday that there have been fifteen total street robberies reported so far in January. While he had not compared that number to other months, Avery said that the robberies have been notable for their viciousness. “It’s alarming because of the violence,” he said.
Both Thursday assaults are under investigation, Avery said. It’s unknown if they are related.
In other police news, according to Avery:
The city’s ShotSpotter system reported shots fired at 1:20 a.m. on Friday on Shelton Avenue. As officers were on their way to the location, two anonymous callers reported multiple shots fired in the area. Police found 12 9-mm shell casings, but no suspects.
PCP Plea
New Haven resident Darryl Lewis pleaded guilty Thursday to possession and intent to distribute 100 grams or more of PCP, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.
According to court documents, Lewis distributed between 400 and 700 grams of PCP on Sept. 19, 2007.
He will be sentenced on April 16, 2010. He faces a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison and a fine of up to $2 million.
