Police said that as they conducted three drug raids Tuesday, suspects tried to hide in closets, climb out back windows, and conceal evidence among children’s clothes.
The police department’s drug squad hit three different locations on Tuesday afternoon, executing drug-related search warrants. Eight arrests were made.
Here’s what happened, according to police spokesman Officer Joe Avery:
The first search warrant was executed at 2:15 p.m. at a house on Willis Street. Police had obtained the warrant after an undercover crack buy at the house. Immediately after entering the residence, police found the man they were looking for on the third floor. In the house, police found crack and marijuana packaged for “street-level sale.” Police also recovered a loaded .45-caliber handgun and ammunition.
A 21-year-old man was arrested without incident and charged with a variety of drug-related offenses. He is expected to be charged with weapons-related offenses as well.
The narc unit then executed a search warrant at a third-floor apartment on Carmel Street. The investigation stemmed from numerous complaints about drug activity at the house. After forcing their way into the home, police found three people in a bedroom. One of them, a 41-year-old woman, was trying to hide herself in the closet, according to police. Police found drug paraphernalia, a small amount of crack, and some packaging material. Three arrests were made.
The third search was at a first-floor apartment on Derby Avenue. Cops had been investigating marijuana dealing by several people at the apartment. Police found numerous people in the home, including small children. One suspect tried to climb out a rear window, but was captured by police. Police found 62 bags of marijuana packaged for sale, drug paraphernalia, and $880 in cash. Some of the evidence was found in the clothing of a small child living in the apartment. Four arrests were made. The Department of Children and Family Services was contacted.
Prof Evades Muggers
In other police news, according to Avery and Yale police:
An 36-year-old associate professor at Yale was assaulted on Canner Street near Anderson Street at 7:25 p.m. on Tuesday. A teenage boy hit him over the head, while four other teens tried to take his belongings. The professor refused. The teens ran away. The victim was not injured, police said.
A man robbed the Forbes Avenue Dunkin Donuts at 9:36 p.m. on Tuesday. He walked in with a black face mask and a silver gun, went behind the counter and grabbed an unknown amount of money, then walked out the front door.
A 27-year-old told police he was walking on Dixwell Avenue near Division Street when he was grabbed from behind and stabbed twice in the back. The assault happened at 3 a.m on Wednesday. The victim was cut again on his hand as he ran away from his attacker. He was brought to Hospital of St. Raphael and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The ShotSpotter system reported two gunshots on Tilton Street at 5:18 p.m. on Tuesday. Police found no evidence.
Fugitive Sought
Police are seeking help tracking down an alleged serial rapist. The suspect is described as a black male of medium build, believed to be in his 30s or 40s. Police say he has been linked by DNA evidence to at least 11 sexual assaults and attempted sexual assaults in Virginia, Maryland, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. The incidents occurred between January 1997 and October 2009.
Police say DNA evidence links the man to a burglary and rape on Smith Avenue in New Haven in 2007. Police believe the man lived in or was familiar with the area of his alleged attacks.
Police seek any information that might help identify or locate the suspect. Anyone with information is encouraged to call Crime Solvers at 866-411-TIPS or contact Lieutenant Julie Johnson of the Special Investigations Unit directly at (203) 946-2804. Callers are not required to leave their name. Police are offering up to a $1,000 cash reward.
