When Bishop Robert H. Stallings Sr. became the pastor of the Church of God and Saints of Christ almost 40 years ago, he never would have anticipated how far he would come, and how much he would become a part of New Haven.

On Saturday, at the intersection of Beers and Elm streets, church members gathered to recognize Stallings’ career of service as it draws to an end. Nazareth Vyraven, a church member, spoke on behalf of the community, commending Stallings on his work locally in New Haven, and internationally, in Africa, where he has actively raised money for sister churches.

At the end of ceremony, everyone gathered around the telephone pole, where a new sign was revealed: for Bishop Robert H. Stallings Sr. Corner. Organizers of the corner designation called it the community’s way of giving back to the bishop, who has given so much to the neighborhood.

Evangelist Jerald Scott Barber, who was recently installed as the church’s new pastor, said he is overjoyed that Stallings has been recognized in this way. This is really a salute to him, and his record in office. He’s a well respected bishop in the city, as a past vice president of the New Haven Ministers Alliance, and an active member in local politics.”

Barber also praised Stallings’ work in expanding the church’s annual thanksgiving free dinner, where meals are served to everyone from the homeless to the students who couldn’t get home for the holidays. Last year the church served over 500 people. This year, Barber said, they hope to serve even more.

Bishop Stallings himself was, of course, the man of the hour Saturday. After thanking everyone, he took pictures next to the sign.

I feel so humble that I am alive to see this,” he said. It just does something to me, to look up at see that sign with my name on it. It’s amazing that the city saw the work I was doing here, and thought enough of me to honor me in this manner. I am just so happy.”

After the unveiling of the sign, the party gathered in the cafeteria of the nearby Troup Middle School for cake and more celebration. Many came up to Stallings to congratulate him.

William Telemaque spoke about Stallings’ immense generosity.

He is the kind of person that people can always come to, and he will always give advice to those in need,” Temelaque said. And it isn’t only advice that he’ll give. If they need anything, like food, or clothing, Bishop Stallings will always give it.”

Kelly Wade, another church member, said she felt similarly, that Stallings is always there for everyone. He is such a man of the people. He is available for anyone that needs assistance, whether it be in the community or in the church. He’s just so open, and really helps to bring the community together.”
