“It’s nice,” Joel Rudikoff said looking across the table at State Senate President Martin Looney, “to have a thinking man across the table.”
He wasn’t in a high-stakes hearing about the Connecticut Democratic Caucus, though. Or a debate about the 2016 election and its clown car of Republican candidates. Or a political discussion at all, for that matter.
Instead, that statement kicked off the “Corned Beef and Knish Sports Hour,” a special edition of Friday’s sports show (usually named the Cannoli and Knish Sports Hour”) on WNHH radio where Looney filled in for Vincent “Cannoli” Mauro, Jr. as he flew down to New Orleans for the Saint-Cowboys game this weekend.
Looney holds a secret treasure trove of sports knowledge in his brain, and didn’t hold back on the air, sharing his woes over the Red Sox before turning his attention to the Mets’ fading hopes for a home-field advantage, the Yankees’ surge ahead, and the NFL season — including Tom Brady’s recent performance “like a possessed … man on fire.”
