A Uniform Plea

The people trying to turn around Clemente Leadership Academy want kids to wear uniforms to school — but not all the kids can afford them.

So Charisse Townsend (pictured), the school’s staff youth coordinator, is asking people in town to donate money so all the kids can show up with right wardrobe.

Some 50 to the 60 kids at the school need help paying for uniforms, which generally run about $25, Townsend said. She asked donors to send $100 or more apiece made out to Roberto Clemente PTO, c/o 360 Columbus Ave., New Haven CT 06519.

The school is beginning an experiment this year as part of New Haven’s citywide reform drive. The school board has contracted with a for-profit company to run the place.

[Wearing uniforms] keeps them away from arguing with other kids, with one person sitting over there with a $60 pair of sneakers,” Townsend said. It takes them away from focusing on what other people are wearing; it focuses them on education.”
