Albert’s Week Starts With A Dead Dog

Albert Miller started the work week picking up leftover holiday trees, as planned. Then came a call from Edgewood Avenue.

A driver had hit and killed a pit bull in the middle of Edgewood, where it passes through the park. He stopped,” a cop on the scene said of the driver. The guy actually felt bad. He owns a farm.”

So, around 8:30 a.m., Miller, a public works laborer who has spent much of the winter plowing streets, headed over to clean up. He parked, put on gloves, grabbed a shovel. Turned out he didn’t need the shovel; he grabbed the dog’s body by the tail, and dragged it to the edge of his 4 by 4, away from the center of traffic. He opened the back hatch, pushed back the trees to make room. He bent down, grabbed the pit bull’s hind legs. then the front legs. He lifted the body, deposited it amid the tree branches, and closed the hatch. Next stop: The animal shelter, where a staffer would have the body incinerated.

I hate to do this,” said Miller, who owns a poodle. He has disposed of road kill before: We have skunks, squirrels, racoons, possums. We get them all. It’s part of the job, for the public benefit.”
