Tax Rebates For Rental Truck Firms Questioned

All trucks are not created equal, especially when it come to tax breaks, an aldermanic committee asserted Monday night, as it set out to make the city some extra money.
City Assessor Bill O’Brien and Tax Collector Maurine Villani came before the aldermanic Tax Abatement Committee to request a tax refund for Ryder Truck Rental. The amount wasn’t specified.
Hill Alderman Jorge Perez asked if the refund request was filed in a timely fashion. O’Brien said no, but that he had spoken with the state many times and had been told not to worry about the deadline.
Committee members cited state statutes saying that the tax exemptions cover trucks that haul freight for their owners, not those that are rented out.
The committee then requested staff to send letters requesting pertinent information to the city corporation counsel and the state attorney general. West Hills/West Rock Alderman Darnell Goldson asked if there were other truck rental companies in the city. The answer: Yes.
“Those exemptions can be revoked,” he said.
After the hearing, O’Brien sent aldermen detailed information about which companies receive this controversial break. Surprise! A top recipient is A. Anastasio & Sons—a politically connected trucking company whose separate $480,903 city tax break raised the ire of aldermen last year.
Click here to read the memo and see the chart O’Brien distributed. Goldson said Wednesday that the list—including the Anastasio break—raises new questions about whether these breaks are kosher, since a trash-hauling company receives them.
Committee Chair Michael Smart said he wants to have answers before the budget vote set for late May.
Stay tuned.

Wow, that memo was quite a read. Aren’t the Anasatasio’s already getting a huge tax break for being a “railroad” company? Now they are also getting one for their “roadroad” company? I guess it’s all a “winwin” for certain businesses in New Haven where “It All Happens Here”! You’ve got THAT right…It sure does happen….right here…
