An Era Ends In The Hill

For the first time in 16 years, a neighborhood in the Hill will be represented by someone other than Andrea Jackson-Brooks.

Jackson-Brooks (pictured), who has represented Ward 4 since 2000 on the Board of Alders and, before that, in the state House of Representatives, has decided not to run for reelection this year. She sent a message to a Democratic ward committee meeting this week that she is stepping down for personal reasons.” Jackson-Brooks chairs the board’s powerful Finance Committee.

The ward committee voted to endorse Evelyn Rodriguez (pictured) for the seat. Rodriguez, who grew up in the Hill, works for the state Department of Labor. She promised the gathering that she’d fight for neighbors and keep them informed of city issues.

A neighborhood ward, Ward 5, also lost a longtime alder this year: Jorge Perez, who resigned after 27 years in the seat (most recently as board president) to become state banking commissioner. The Democratic ward committee endorsed Perez’s nephew, David Reyes, Monday evening as candidate for the open seat this fall.
