Sheen Dissipates

In my day when the Mill River was widely known to Fair Havenites as"Stinky River" ---a very dark green and really putrid double channel, we would have been thrilled if it had resembled the pretty blue lagoon pictured above.

Agreed with Walt that the Mill River does seem to be in a better state than it once was.

I wrote a small post last week in hopes that I might meet new people thinking about ways of improving the areas around the river.

People in Fair Haven and the surrounding area consume the fish they catch in the Mill and Quinnipiac rivers. According to Public Affairs Officer Betts "we are in the assessment phase." In the mean time has anyone posted notice of the spill or talked to the people who fish up the river toward the old tidal gate, down the river at the Criscuolo park, around the bend at James Street or on the Tomlinson Bridge? Should residents who fish be be concerned given that the Coast Guard doesn't appear to know exactly what went in the water and in what quantities? Has the hazardous material been removed from the old power station yet? Are City Health Department officials in the information loop? Was anything else found on or near the site that the community should know about?

Poor people with fewer dietary options than most should be the first to be informed, from a health perspective they are most vulnerable. It is important to get the information right but let's not risk the health of the community because we are not sure we know the correct name of the chemical or the exact amount that was spilled. If there is any higher than normal risk in consuming the fish from the river the community should be told about the risk possible risk sooner rather than later.
