Arresting Patterns On Law, Life, and Culture

On the latest episode of Law, Life, and Culture, host Betsy Kim talked with Leland Moore, one of the curators of Arresting Patterns: Race and the Criminal Justice System.” The artwork in the exhibition, which runs at Artspace until Sept. 13, deals with the topic of racial disparity in the criminal justice system.

The artists featured in the exhibition include Jamal Cyrus, Maria Gaspar, Titus Kaphar, Iyaba Ibo Mandingo, Adrian Piper, Laurie Jo Reynolds, Dread Scott, and Andy Warhol. To read a previous article that the Independent ran on the exhibition, click here.

The conversation ranged from the art to the topic itself and the thorny political issues that surround it.

I think that the data paints a picture,” Moore said, about who is in prison … I think it’s important that people know about this disparity. I think it’s important for people to talk about it.”

The point is really to encourage people to discuss it,” he continued, because if you don’t, the alternative is a status quo that is unacceptable.”
