Arts Happenings for Aug. 3 – 9

It’s portmanteau word week: Dishdog. Lipgloss. Peabody. But then there are just the simplest, sweetest labels, like jazz and bride and pie. Yes! Pie!

Monday, Aug. 3

Peabody Fair

The Peabody on the Road educational booth is at the Fair Haven branch of the New Haven Free Public Library at 4 p.m. 182 Grand Ave.

Tuesday, Aug. 4

Wayne at Twilight

Wayne Escoffery, the acclaimed New York-based jazz saxophonist who cut his teeth in Connecticut clubs and music schools back in the early 90s, returns to one of his alma maters, Neighborhood Music School, for a Twilight Tuesdays concert in the Park of the Arts behind the school building at 100 Audubon St. The event includes performances by current NMS students who are raising money and awareness of the school’s Summer Jazz Scholarship program. $30. Wednesday, Aug. 5

We Could Be Heroes
One of today’s events in the summerlong superhero-themed program that are being conducted around the state is the real-life-sized Hero in Every One of Us” talk at the Wilson Branch of New Haven Free Public Library. 4 p.m. 303 Washington Ave. (203) 946‑2228.

Pardee-Morris Meadows Brothers

The Meadows Brothers perform 7 p.m. at the Pardee-Morris House’s outdoor Twilight Concert series. Wood-fired pizza from Frank Andrews Mobile Kitchen will be sold so you can make a dinner of it. The concert is free. (203) 562‑4183.

Nine Laughs

Thursday, Aug. 6

Woolf Ruhls

The final show of the Yale Summer Cabaret 2015 season is Orlando, Sarah Ruhl’s adaptation of the Virginia Woolf novel about a gender-changing, time-traveling adventurer. The lyrical, romantic drama is directed by Summer Cabaret artistic director Sara Holdren. $14-$25. 217 Park St. (203) 432-1566.

Unsung Jazz
The 2015 New Haven Jazz Festival, which consists of numerous club shows over the next few weeks and a culminating outdoor concert Aug. 22 on New Haven Green, kicks off tonight by presenting Jazz Haven’s “Unsung Heroes” award to former New Haven Cultural Affairs director Barbara Lamb. 8 p.m. at the 116 Crown bar/restaurant, 116 Crown St. (203) 777-3116.

Friday, Aug. 7

Minions Unite!
Despicable Me, the film which introduced those pesky Minions, is the Friday Flix feature at the main (Ives) New Haven Free Public Library. 2 p.m. 133 Elm St.

Dishdog Rock
The high-energy rock/R&B act Javier & Los Dishdogs, from Boston, dog Cafe Nine (250 State St.) at 9 p.m. along with Meriden punks Zombii and self-styled “power romance” combo Thrust. $5. (203) 789-8281.

Bell of Middlebury
The Summer Carillon Concert series’ main bell-ringer this week is George Matthew of Middlebury, Vermont. The favored listening spot is in Yale’s Branford College Courtyard, 74 High St., New Haven. 7 p.m. Free. And feel free to bring a picnic.

Oh my Gavin

Pie!
Pie On 9, the annual all-you-can-eat fundraiser for the CitySeed farmers-market non-profit, is held outdoors on Orange Street (between Chapel and Crown) from 6 to 8 p.m. For $18, you can eat slices from the entries in the pie contest as well as Ashley’s ice cream, listen to music DJed by DJ Tootskee and otherwise enjoy one of the most joyous block parties of summertime in New Haven. Burlesque Crisis
