Burglaries nearly tripled in the Downtown/Wooster Square area between June and July, said police spokesman Officer Joe Avery. He issued recommendations for preventing more theft.
Avery sent out a list of tips on Wednesday for preventing burglaries. Click here to read it.
The advice came in response to recent uptick in burglaries, Avery said. He provided some statistics on the bump in burglaries: Between May 30 and June 26, Downtown and Wooster Square were hit by 11 total burglaries. Between June 17 and July 24, that number jumped to 32.
Police District 7, Newhallville and East Rock, also saw an increase in that time period. Burglaries in that area went up from 23 to 32.
Avery said incidences of burglary normally go up during the summertime, since people leave windows open to stay cool. But the recent spike is high even for the summer, he said.
“These numbers are off the hook,” he said.
Police are still analyzing incident reports to see if the burglaries are the work of the same people. Avery said police are also watching to see if burglaries in Wooster Square decrease after the arrest of the man who was charged with stealing from Alderman Michael Smart’s house.
