Alleged Attackers Claim To Be Victims

When a fight broke out at Libra’s Cafe late Sunday night, police had to figure out how to differentiate the attackers from the victims.

Officers Daniel Conklin and William Gargone headed to the cafe at 56 Main St. after getting a report that two men had been attacked, according to a release by Officer David Hartman.

They found a car matching the description of the attackers going through Main Street Annex and Townsend Avenue.

While the officers spoke with their suspects, two men pulled up in a car and said they were the ones who had been attacked. One of the men was bleeding from his right thumb; the other had a minor cut on his left bicep.

They identified the men who were stopped as their attackers. The fight occurred, they said, when they tried to break up a fight between some patrons of the bar. One of the attackers had a knife and cut one of the victims, they said. Interviewed separately, they confirmed the other’s story. One said an attacker had grabbed his cell phone when it fell during the attack.

Police saw the man’s cell phone and a bloody knife in the alleged attackers’ car.

But when they spoke to the alleged attackers, they claimed to have been the victims of the men who were wounded. Police arrested them and charged them with breach of peace and larceny.
