Sarah Oren Photo In a dual fundraiser for the Robin I. Kroogman New Haven Animal Shelter and the New Haven police K-9 unit, about two dozen dogs turned out for a “Bark Mitzvah” and some human-canine bonding.

Kids and dogs played on a grassy field at the event Sunday at Congregation B’nai Jacob.

Police Officers Lars Vallin, Renee Forte and Steven Silk and Detective Jody Novella brought dogs Nia (pictured, with Novella), Xander, Boris and crack gun-sniffer Bitang from the two-year-old K-9 unit.

They showed the crowd examples of search-and-rescue, narcotics searches and obedience.

Kids and adults alike were in awe of the skills these dogs possess.

The event raised over $200, and also featured dogs available for adoption. Five shelter volunteers brought two dogs: Chocolate, a Lab mix, and Elba (pictured), a Chow mix. Both are great around other dogs.

To top off the “Bark Mitzvah,” Tzvi Rapaport, the education director at the congregation’s religious school, led a blessing over each dog in attendance.

The dogs had a great time, and we hope that the children in attendance gained a stronger appreciation for pet adoption and police dogs—and, most importantly, kindness to animals.

What a great event, it is always nice to see the police and canines interacting with the public.
