Bike to Work Day, Month and Year

There was a nip in the air as Elm City Cycling held its final monthly Bike to Work Day. Paul, a Yale grad student spending his first fall in New Haven, enjoyed banana bread baked by Esther Brown (on right), while Marissa Falcigno (left) radiated a sunny smile to warm things up.

Bruce Crowder, another regular bike commuter, stopped on the Green to fuel up for his ride to work at the event, which took place on Friday. Since the rain-out of New Haven’s participation in National Bike to Work Day last May, members of Elm City Cycling decided not to put all our eggs in one annual basket, totally dependent on the forces of nature. So we offered juice, coffee, homemade goodies and bicycle giveaways like maps and water bottles on the last Friday of every month in the summer and fall. The turnout ranged from a handful to many more, if the weather was particularly fine. Regardless, each Bike to Work Day served to strengthen the ties of New Haven’s cycling community and expand the list-serve of Elm City Cycling a little or a lot.

And this was the view from the top of East Rock (looking north toward the Sleeping Giant in Hamden), as this reporter headed home from the Green that day. Bike to Work Day will resume in the spring.
