Money? Or Happiness?

GIRL!” Janna Wagner was yelling across the table. Choose the money!!”

One side of the table, and then the studio, filled with wild laughter.

Wagner wasn’t robbing a bank. Nor was she speaking to a crowd of college girls who needed some pragmatic economic advice. She was getting into her reading niche. And it was something that she was going to get passionate about.

On the latest episode of WNHH radio’s Book Talk,” she spoke with host Cyd Oppenheimer and fellow reader Christine Kim about Min Jin Lee’s novel Free Food for Millionaires. Published to great acclaim in 2007, Free Food is the story of Korean-American Princeton grad Casey Han, trying to make her way in the world of investment bankers in 1990s New York City.

I’m talking about gender and class and sexism and race.” Lee explained to Oppenheimer an the interview segment of the episode. “[But] my book is really … a critique of capitalism.”

To listen to the interview, a heated discussion, and NHFPL librarian Margaret Girgis’ young adult pick of the week, click on the audio above or find the episode in iTunes or on any podcast app under WNHH Community Radio.”
