Is It All About Mobility?

Oh, that just gave me chills!” Jessica Sager gasped.

It wasn’t the kind of thing that gives everyone chills. But put two bookworms and one high school English teacher in a room and let them dive into Matthew Thomas’s novel We Are Not Ourselves, and one’s sudden new, darker take on the ending sends shivers down the others’ spines.

On the latest episode of WNHH radio’s Book Talk,” host Cyd Oppenheimer and her guests, Sager and teacher Annie Thoms, took on Thomas’s book, a sprawling saga about baby boomer, Irish-American New Yorker Eileen Tumulty, and her quest for upward mobility.

I was writing about the American Dream,” Thomas told Oppenheimer in the interview segment of the episode. The potency of that dream… [and] whether it’s still viable or not.”

To listen to the episode, which includes an interview with Thomas and NHFPL librarian John Roberts’ poetical take on Lost in NYC: A Subway Adventure by Nadja Spiegelman (a former student of Thoms!), click on the audio above, or find the episode in iTunes or on any podcast app under WNHH Community Radio.”
