Convicted Firefighter Resigns, Keeps Pension Hope Alive

A city firefighter convicted of attempted bribery handed in his resignation Wednesday — keeping open the possibility he may win a disability pension.

The firefighter, Aaron Brantley, sent a note to the fire chief, which was then shared with the payroll department, that he is resigning effective immediately, city human resources chief Stephen Librandi confirmed.

The city Fire Commission had planned to meet Friday to consider whether to fire Brantley, whose conviction was upheld last month by a three-judge state appellate court.

That meeting is now cancelled. Fire Chief Ralph Black could not be reached for comment about the cancellation.

After the appellate court upheld Brantley’s conviction, Brantley, who is 36 and had been working on the job, submitted a request for a disability pension, as detailed in this article first reporting the request. (Brantley doesn’t have enough years on the job to retire as of right with a pension.) If he had been fired, he would not have been able to obtain the pension. Now he still has a chance at the pension when the Policeman and FIreman’s Pension Fund takes up the matter at an upcoming meeting.

However, a state law passed in the wake of government corruption scandals allows the attorney general to pursue the cancellation of the pension of a government employee convicted of a felony.

Stay tuned.
